Program details
Led by SGInnovate (a Deep Tech ecosystem builder and investor, backed by the Singaporean Government), the Summation Programme is Singapore’s flagship deep-tech apprenticeship initiative designed to develop globally competitive talent for high-growth technology sectors.
The programme places top students and recent graduates from around the world within early-stage deep-tech companies in Singapore. Apprentices work directly on technical challenges in areas such as artificial intelligence, robotics, quantum technologies, cybersecurity, biotechnology, and sustainability. Each participant is paired with a dedicated technical mentor and contributes to real R&D or product development work within their host company.

Note: The current program mostly targets STEM students, with some placements that may be of interest to students in Haskayne or related fields.
All of the Summation apprenticeships are full-time, project-based assignments lasting three to six months. Projects run year-round. Exact start/end dates vary depending on the project; some projects allow for flexible/negotiable dates.

Costs
There is no fee to apply for the Summation Programme.
SGInnovate has provided an average monthly budget:
- Meals: SGD$300-450 (based on SGD$10-15 per day for 3 meals at a food court)
- Transport: SGD$50-100 (dependent on the mode of transport)
- Personal expenses: SGD$100-350 (e.g. clothes, toiletries, miscellaneous)
- Total average monthly budget ranges from SGD$750-$2,000, depending on the participant's lifestyle choices.
Other costs:
- Work Holiday Pass: SGD$175
- Bank account: May require an initial deposit between SGD$500-$1,000

Funding
Accepted participants will receive a monthly stipend of SGD$3,000-$6,000 (undergrads get $3,000/month, Masters students get $4,000/month and PhD students get $6,000/month). They also get a living allowance of up to SGD$1,500 and round-trip airfare.
Participants also receive a Training Employment Pass visa, fully supported by SGInnovate. Due to special arrangements between SGInnovate and the Singaporean government, the participant's nationality/citizenship does not impact visa eligibility; as long as students are enrolled at a Canadian institution, they should be able to receive the visa without issue.
The SGInnovate team provides recommendations and guidance, however, participants are expected to search for and obtain housing independently.
Some of their recommended options include Co-Living Spaces (fully furnished rooms with flexible lease terms and shared facilities) and Student Accommodation (short-term stays available for students in purpose-built housing).
As noted on SGInnovate's website, eligibility is assessed in 3 areas:
- Profile: You should be an undergraduate, Master’s or PhD student with universities, or a fresh graduate with < 1-year of working experience.
- Skills: Programming skills are required for selected projects, and basic Deep Tech knowledge will be a plus point.
- Experience: You should have experience from tech projects, other internships and relevant competitions.
Applications are open continuously, with projects being offered year-round. SGInnovate recommends applying at least 3 months before your desired project start date.
International travel presents challenges that may not be found when attending classes on campus. There may be a lack of resources, emergency services, hospitals, accessibility issues and/or demands on the physical and the mental self, all of which can challenge individuals when away from their usual support systems and structures. Adequate preparation is essential.
For this reason, it is imperative that you evaluate all aspects of your own physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual condition against the rigors of the particular global learning program you are selecting.
