David Achuroa’s research inspired by his childhood in Ghana
Born in a farming village in Ghana, with no electricity or health-care facilities, David was afflicted by polio at the age of two, a disease which left him crippled. In spite of numerous hardships, he graduated university and applied for a Queen Elizabeth Scholarship to continue studies at UCalgary.
He not only survived, he thrived and is driven to go back and help his people. “I need to build myself up in a way that, one day, when I return home, I can do more to support those families and their children with disabilities,” he says. “This is what I want to accomplish in life. It means everything to me.”

Undergrads discover limits of their endurance in Ghana Field School
Juliana Lyon, a double major in Development Studies and Geography went on a group study program to Ghana to research environmental policies in developing countries.
She fretted about the unrelenting heat and food. Later she learned that her real tests would be those of an academic nature, doing field research in a developing country. Those challenges were often unexpected and they varied between each student. Among the group were developing studies, international relations, political science, economics, sociology, geography and anthropology majors.
