The Calgary Cultural District Project was initiated by the Calgary Performing Arts Center in early 2000, as a means of building on the ideas and momentum generated by the design charrette Brainstorm - Imagining Calgary’s New Downtown Arts District that was held September 1999. The EVDS research team was engaged to provide a framework for development of the cultural district within the greater downtown region. It includes planning principles that aim to result in a distinct neighbourhood character, function and form based on a value of public life and of cultural enjoyment and expression. The resulting project document was adopted by the Calgary Cultural District Partnership in 2001 as a framework for planning.
