A Day in the Life of
Bridgeland-Riverside
This is an attempt to give a
daily routine account of what it would be like to be a couple of residents
in Bridgeland- Riverside. This story is a bout a student, Suzy , that is
a newcomer to the community and her uncle, James, who is a long time resident
who works in an office on the west side of Downtown.
Being a newcomer to the area the
student has taken advantage of the relatively cheap rental units above the
coffee shop along the southwest side of 1st Avenue NE. Suzy thought that
the area would offer the street life that she wished to experience while
a student at the University of Calgary. Suzy's uncle had suggested the area
as a good possibility. Suzy considered her alternatives and concluded that
the proximity to the LRT station on Memorial Drive NE offered a cheap solution
to her transportation needs. Looking out the window she noticed that the
sun was already shinning on the street below on this early September
day. |

Meanwhile our long time resident
James was following his daily routine getting ready for work and the short
trip Downtown. Upon leaving his house it was a short walk to the coffee
shop in the plaza at the corner of 1st Avenue and 9th Street NE. After picking
up his coffee he headed south along the pedestrian cobblestone corridor and
through the 'Old General' memorial arch. James always liked walking through
the arch and glancing at his birth plaque that is stamped on the recycled
hospital brick on the upper left side of the the arch. Through the arch and
to his left he looked for what movies were playing tonight at the theatre.
Passing the theatre it was a short walk to the meeting place with his niece.
Just down the street was the medical building. James felt good that his
wife Helen would soon be interned there to give birth
to their second child.
Upon leaving the apartment, Suzy walked
down the back stairs and into the alley. She felt safe with all the residences
bounding each side of the alley. Turning south and heading down 8th Street
NE it was a short walk to the fountain at the top of the escarpment. Suzy
paused to toss in a coin to set off the new year with a good luck wish. Looking
down over the city scene below she considered herself lucky to enjoy such
a beautiful view. In front of her was the outdoor amphitheatre and beside
her she noticed one of the many community events boards. On the board she
read that a local Shakespearean theatre club would be presenting " Much ado
about nothing" on the weekend. Continuing east along along the escarpment
she noticed the pond her right. She had remembered the words from her family
about how cold it was in Calgary and she thought how refreshing it would
be to be skating outdoors later in the year. Approaching 9th Street NE she
noticed her uncle James waiting on the bench drinking coffee.

After a short greeting they headed
south glancing at the LRT station complex in the near distance. Continuing
down the cobblestone path they crossed Mc Dougal Road NE beside one of the
traffic calming circles found in the area. To their immediate right they
passed the baseball diamonds and soccer field and noticed the Parks employee
taking care of the lawns after the weekend league activities. On the right
was the entrance of the community centre and the plus 15 access to the LRT,
but they decided to continue outside for the short walk. Looking at the community
bulletin board outside they noticed that students got reduced rates to the
activity centre, and also that starting in a few days was a Hatha Yoga workshop.
Entering the LRT complex and climbing a set of stairs they decided to pick
up s bagel and a newspaper for their trip on the LRT and made a mental note
to remember to pick up some groceries at the convenience store on the
promenade on the return journey. Before departing on their separate ways
they made plans to meet later at the plaza for dinner and a movie.
Both of them agreed that the short walk was a convenient and invigorating
way to start off the day.
