Students lift up their eyes to Thirsk

As the International Space Station carrying astronaut Robert Thirsk, BSc'76, LLD'09, rocketed across the sky Sept. 24, more than 400 Schulich School of Engineering students packed into a tight square, lifted their eyes and arms towards the heavens and hoped their inspiring message flashed from Earth would find its way to U of C's famous alumnus in orbit.

Fine arts, native communities lose a giant

The U of C lost a longtime friend, supporter and alumna with the unexpected passing of multi-media artist, writer and aboriginal advocate Joane Cardinal-Schubert, BFA'77, LLD'03. She died Sept. 17 in Calgary at the age of 67, succumbing to a second battle with cancer. Learn More...

Medicine names two alumni of distinction

Congratulations to the Faculty of Medicine's 2009 Alumni of Distinction recipients, James Kennedy, MD'84, for his pioneering research into new therapies for patients with mental illness, and William Ghali, MD'90, for his research into improving the effectiveness and efficiency of health care delivery and outcomes. The faculty will celebrate their contributions at the annual alumni dinner Oct. 3 at the Calgary Zoo.

Oliver honoured by Women's Resource Centre

Congratulations to Carol Oliver, MCS'95, who will be recognized Oct. 23 by the Women's Resource Centre as their 2009 Distinguished Alumna. Carole is executive director of the Calgary Distress Centre and co-chair of the Canadian Women's Foundation and is passionate about women's issues, gender equality, community building and organizational leadership. Heat-loving bacteria may hint at Arctic reserves

An international team of scientists led by Casey Hubert, BSc'98, PhD'04, has detected high numbers of heat-loving bacteria in the Arctic Ocean. The spores might clues to the existence of undiscovered offshore petroleum reservoirs. Learn More...

Christopher Duthie, BFA'08, stars in his own production, n00b, Oct. 6-10 at Epcor Centre's Motel. N00b was performed for sold-out audiences at Sage Theatre's IGNITE! Mann medals in Police & Fire Games

The Calgary Fire Department's Lanny Mann, BKin'01, earned a bronze medal in the 10-km Senior A cross country race at the World Police and Fire Games, held in August in Vancouver, with a time of 33:32.5. He and his fellow medalists from Moscow and South Africa were joined on the podium by Lanny's daughter, Madelyn. Learn More...

Weiss joins Royal Society Fellows

Six U of C faculty members, one of whom is also an alumnus, will be elected this year to Canada's most prestigious academic body, the Royal Society of Canada, the Academies of Arts, Humanities and Sciences of Canada.
