New members welcomed to alumni board

Four new members have joined the Alumni Association board of directors, bringing a broad range of expertise and community leadership. The new members are: Russ Mackenzie, BSc'87, a civil engineer with Stantec Consulting Ltd., volunteer for the U of C's Engineering Internship Advisory Council and a member of the Engineering Associates Program; Bonnie MacRae-Kilb, BPE'83, twice a U of C athlete of the year and now a Calgary-based interior designer who remains active as an athlete, coach and mentor; Emily Brown, BEd'06, who teaches Grade 7 math, science and rocketry at the Calgary Science School, and is a girls' basketball and track and field coach; and John Hickie, MD'91, a practitioner in occupational medicine and coach in cross-country skiing and soccer.

Engineering alumni tour space centre

Calgary's Glen Fischer, BSc'76, Soren Christiansen, BSc'76, and Alan Trentham, BSc'76, had been talking for some time about going to Houston to reconnect with former classmate Dirk Smit, BSc'76. In September, they finally took that road trip and connected with another alum—Robert Thirsk, BSc'76. The NASA astronaut, who is set to go to the International Space Station in May, gave the group and spouses a personally guided "back-door" tour of the Johnson Space Center, where they also met Laura Lucier, BSc'99, a mission planner and robotics flight controller.

Alumni featured in speaker series

A number of U of C alumni are being featured in the University of Calgary Press's fall speaker's series Literature at Lunch. Vivian Lalande, MSc'83, PhD'91, former editor of the Canadian Journal of Counseling, spoke on new frontiers in scholarly journal publishing. U of C history professor Warren Elofson, BA'71, speaks Oct. 29 on the process of being published. On Nov. 5, Verna Reid, MA'72, PhD'03, talks about women shaping themselves through their work. And on Nov. 26, Communication and Culture's Gwendolyn Blue, MA'99, discusses a new series on food for the U of C Press.

Creative power of women unveiled in new book

In addition to being a speaker in the U of C Press's fall series, Verna Reid, MSc'83, PhD'91, has also just published a new book called Women Between: Construction of Self in the Work of Sharon Butala, Aganetha Dyck, Mary Meigs and Mary Pratt. In this book, Reid connects the lives of five remarkable Canadian women—including herself—by means of an intimate conversation that redefines the concept of growing old. In 2003, at the age of 75, Reid was awarded the first PhD to be given by the Faculty of Communication and Culture at the U of C.

Author recognized for first novel

Andrew Wedderburn, BA'01, was among six authors shortlisted for the 2007 Amazon.ca/Books in Canada First Novel Award. At the awards ceremony last month at the Drake Hotel in Toronto, he read from his novel Milk Chicken Bomb. The $7,500 prize was eventually awarded to author Gil Adamson.

Alumnus publishes new book of photography

Photographer Kirk Gittings, MFA'83, has a new book out—Shelter from the Storm: The Photography of Kirk Gittings. He's also contributed a chapter to a new book on inkjet printing by Andrew Darlow, entitled 301 Inkjet Tips and Techniques: An Essential Printing Resource for Photographers.

Open House opens doors to alumni

University of Calgary alumni and their guests were treated to early access to the university's Open House on Oct. 18. An annual event aimed at attracting future students, Open House offered 3,500 visitors a chance to see more than 45 faculty and student service exhibits, take campus and residence tours, and attend information sessions.

Book explores graduate education in midlife

Alumni who are thinking about going back to school to get a master's degree will be interested in new research from the Faculty of Education that suggests midlife is an ideal time to return to university. In a new book, Jo-Anne Willment says completion of a master's degree can be transformational for adults in midlife.

Life lessons through dance

But having studied both, Marnie Sutherland Olivier, BA'00, LLB'04, says she's applied the same principles of determination and dedication as a dancer, teacher and lawyer. Now owner of Calgary's Dance Divas studio, Sutherland Olivier is teaching her students life lessons through the vehicle of dance.

Helping students feel at home

Almost 30 years ago, Raymond Kan, BSc'80, came from Hong Kong to study mechanical engineering at the U of C. He remembers well the feeling of being so far from home. It was this first-hand knowledge of the needs of international students that prompted Kan to donate $25,000 toward a student and meeting space at the U of C's new International House residence.

As a Metis woman, Kerrie Moore, BSW'03, MSW'04, has faced both racial and gender barriers. As a holistic social worker, she combines spiritual and alternative healing practices with academic methods to help heal trauma in aboriginal communities.

Calgary entrepreneur W. Brett Wilson, MBA'85, panelist on CBC's The Dragon's Den, is reported to be angling to buy a piece of the NHL's Nashville Predators. U of C to build biomedical engineering centre

At his annual Report to the Community, U of C President Harvey Weingarten announced that the university will expand its internationally recognized work in the rapidly growing field of biomedical engineering with the creation of the National Biomedical Engineering Innovation Centre. The centre will develop and commercialize technologies to be used in the health-care sector to help prevent, diagnose and treat illnesses.

Olympian joins Dinos swim team

Olympian Erica Morningstar has confirmed that she will swim for the University of Calgary in 2008-09. The 19-year-old Morningstar is the Canadian record holder in both the 100-metre freestyle and the 200-metre IM, representing Canada in both events at the Beijing Olympics.

Dinos host play-off football

Nov. 2: Come cheer on the Dinos as they take on the Regina Rams on Sunday, Nov. 2 at 1 p.m. at McMahon Stadium. For the first time since 2002, the University of Calgary Dinos football team will host a playoff game: a Canada West semi-final. Tickets are available at all Calgary Co-op customer service locations and online at www.goDINOS.com. Tickets are also available for purchase by phone at (403) 220-7749 or at the gate on game day. Adult tickets are just $5, with four-person family packs for $10. A portion of the proceeds will go to support Calgary Minor Football.

Nov. 6: The Glenbow Museum and the Alberta Global Forum present a public dialogue called Is Beauty an Ugly Obsession? on Nov. 6 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Rosza Centre. Panelists include Kirsten Pullen, a professor of performance studies at Texas A&M University and author of Actresses and Whores: On Stage and in Society; Jenifer Merifield, CEO, founder and editor-in-chief of Girls Can Do Anything magazine; Rebecca Sullivan, U of C Communication and Culture professor and popular culture expert; and Kelly Streit, CEO of Mode Models, an international modeling agency.

Be part of hockey night on campus

Nov. 14: Wear red and cheer on your U of C Dinos as they take on the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns on Friday, Nov. 14 at Father David Bauer Arena. Be sure to arrive early for a family-friendly tailgate party with hot chocolate, cookies, shinny and shutout competitions. Guests will also receive a food voucher to redeem at the concession during the game. The tailgate starts at 5 p.m. and the puck drops at 7 p.m. Cost for this event is $5.

Nov. 14: The Haskayne School of Business is holding a networking lunch for MBA alumni on Nov. 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Delta Bow Valley. Speaker Keith Thompson, leader of CGI Calgary's business continuity solutions practice, will illustrate the key components of a successful business continuity management program, including the often overlooked topic of pandemic planning. Cost is $30.

Nov. 14: Spend an evening with pianist/composer Heather Schmidt, as she presents a concert featuring her own compositions as well as the music of two talented but under-recognized 19th century female composers: Clara Schumann and Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel. Concerts take place Nov. 14 and 15 at 8 p.m. in the Eckhardt-Gramatte Concert Hall.

Canada's Poet Laureate comes to U of C

Nov. 18: The Faculty of Humanities and Department of English bring Parliamentary Poet Laureate John Steffler to Calgary for the Paget/Hoy Speaker Series on Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 7:30 p.m. in Craigie Hall C105. The event is free and open to the public. In his talk, "The Uses of Poetry," Steffler, an award-winning poet and novelist, gives his thoughts on how poetry is language that is fully alive and conveys an excited experience of life.

Nov. 25: The Department of Drama presents Hello...Hello (A Romantic Satire), by Karen Hines Nov. 25 to Dec. 6 in the Reeve Theatre. Hines, creator of Pochsy and director of Mump and Smoot, has created a beautifully tragic comedy in which economics is the new religion and art has finally melded with commerce. In this love story, the latest fashion craze is a tiny glass ball filled with poison which hangs from the necks of every accountant, CEO and telemarketer.

Scholarship honours memory of humanities dean

Rowland Smith, dean of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Calgary, passed away unexpectedly on Oct. 20. A Rhodes Scholar, Smith joined the University of Calgary in 2004 after serving as vice-president academic at Wilfrid Laurier University. A memorial scholarship has been established in his name. An online link has been created to allow donors to give through netcommunity.

Did You Know?

A new comet has been discovered and named after U of C asteroid hunter Rob Cardinal, a professor in the Faculty of Science. It is the first time a comet has been discovered at U of C's Rothney Astrophysical Observatory and only the second Canadian discovery of a comet, using a Canadian telescope, in nearly a decade.
