Alumni family grows to 130,000

About 4,500 graduates earned their degrees at nine Convocation ceremonies June 9 to 13, growing the U of C alumni family to 130,000. Students were led in a new Graduation Pledge and then welcomed to the Alumni Association by nine distinguished alumni.

A fair to remember

Hundreds of alumni and their families took advantage of a sunny day on June 14 to attend the U of C's sixth annual Campus Fair. It was a day full of fun as families toured more than 60 exhibits, including the Alumni Association's ever-popular "future U of C grad" photo booth.

Alumni breakfast and AGM

More than 150 alumni and their families kicked off Campus Fair on June 14 with the Alumni Association's annual pancake breakfast, complete with fiddle music and door prizes. The association's Annual General Meeting followed, with Ken McKinnon, BComm'80, installed as the new president. Outgoing president Tamara McCarron, BSc'00, MBA'05, and long-time volunteers Dean Brawn, BA'89, and Judy McCaffrey, BA'82, were honoured.

Arch Awards party a hit

At the 2008 Arch Awards gala, the U of C's alumni family and friends were treated to delicious food, a great party and some truly inspiring messages from this year's award winners. More than 300 guests mingled at the Grand Theatre in downtown Calgary on June 5 to celebrate the 2008 Distinguished Alumni Award winner Susan Smith, BN'75, PhD'95, and the 2008 Graduate of the Last Decade Robyn Hauck, BCS'05. Both winners spoke about their motivation to change the world and "the power of one" to make a difference.

Alumni help with Solar Decathlon

A number of U of C alumni are lending helping hands to the Alberta Solar Decathlon project, which involves students, faculty and staff from the University of Calgary, SAIT Polytechnic and Mount Royal College. The team, which is building a solar-powered house to compete in an international competition next fall, recently won an Energy-TV award and a donation of solar panels. Among those alumni involved in the project: David Silburn, MArch'08, Justin Pockar, BSc'97, MArch'02, Alex Joseph, MEdes'03, Raheem Bardai, BSc'06, Eric de Ridder, BA'71, MEDes'81 and Scott Pickles MArch'03.

Alberta roadshow hits Palo Alto

U of C president Harvey Weingarten, Rose Goldstein, VP (research), and Roman Cooney VP (external relations), traveled to Palo Alto, CA, on June 18 to meet with U of C alumni working in Silicon Valley. As it has for several years, the Government of Alberta hosted the reception, at the Sheraton Palo Alto, and connected with alumni from all three Alberta universities to talk about the province as a good place to do business.

Nursing alumni raise bursary funds

The annual Faculty of Nursing Alumni luncheon at the Calgary Winter Club on May 31 raised $10,000 for Nursing Alumni bursaries. Hosted by broadcaster Tara McCool, the highlight of the lunch was a silent auction of local art, jewelry and gift certificates donated by individuals and merchants.

Engineering endowment grows

The U of C's Engineering Endowment (UCEE) Fund has surpassed $1.5 million. Dean Olafson, BSc'86, MBA'93, operations manager with Ber-Mac Electrical Instrumentation in Calgary and vice-chair of the UCEE board, says getting involved is a way of giving back to the community and helping to educate future engineers. "Thanks to the fund, students at the Schulich School of Engineering are getting broader experiences and they're getting exposed to more real world applications."

Alum gets CA lifetime achievement award

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta has awarded Calgary's Steve Allan, BComm'67, vice-president of RSM Richter, with the lifetime achievement award. The award is presented to a Fellow of the Chartered Accountants of Alberta who has served both their profession and their community in an exemplary fashion. A chartered accountant for almost 40 years, Allan has built a very successful professional career, while also continually finding ways to give back to the community as an avid volunteer. He was named Calgary's Citizen of the Year for 2006.

Deadline looms for distinguished Medicine alumni

Following on last year's inaugural award to recognize the special contribution of an alumnus to the field of medicine, the Faculty of Medicine's Alumni Affairs office is now inviting nominations for a new Humanitarian Award "in recognition of distinguished community or volunteer service at home or abroad, which has made a difference to the well being of others."

When Kirk Dunkley, BFA'08, was commissioned to create this year's new Arch Awards, he drew his inspiration from the simple geometric forms that are found everywhere in nature. The result are unique and haunting sculptures crafted from hundred of layers of acrylic.

After working with the newly established University of Calgary Office of Sustainability, Anna Nowaczyk, B'Comm'07, has become a bit of a torchbearer for sustainability stewardship. "All you have to do is pick up a newspaper to see the complex challenges that today's societies are faced with. It's pretty scary stuff that can leave you feeling helpless," she says.

Jessica Zelinka, BA'07, is putting the two-day heptathlon Olympic event—seven disciplines including 100-metre hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200-metre dash, long jump, javelin throw and 800 metres—on the map. And in the process, she may just emerge as the queen of the Beijing games. Maclean's magazine profiled her as one of Canada's Olympic hopefuls. Read more...

Selling cars is in Vicki Appleby's blood. The 43-year-old general manager of Calgary's Crowfoot Dodge grew up watching her father buy, sell and lease vehicles. Brain research gets $25M boost from philanthropist

American philanthropist and billionaire businessman Boone Pickens officially opened the Boone Pickens Centre for Neurological Science and Advanced Technologies at the Hotchkiss Brain Institute last week, and announced an unexpected bequest of an additional $25 million through Reach!, the joint fundraising initiative of the Calgary Health Region and the University of Calgary.

Calgary Awards recognize U of C connections

A number of U of C alumni were among those to receive Calgary Awards on June 10, a recognition program that celebrates significant contributions to improving quality of life in Calgary. Michael Tims, BComm'76, chairman of Peters & Co. Ltd., was named Citizen of the Year. Scott Bietz, BSc'87, was rewarded for his work in the education field and Diane Guichon, MA'06, received the City of Calgary's W.O. Mitchell Book Prize for Birch Split Bark, which originated as a creative writing master's thesis at the U of C.

U of C alumni were among those honoured at the first annual Mayor's Evening for Business and the Arts. Simon Mallett, MFA'06, was nominated for the Enbridge Emerging Artist Award, which Helen Husak, BA'02, won. Arbour Lake School won the Telus Artistic Innovation Award. Several U of C alumni, including Scott Rogers, BFA'03, and John Frosst, BFA'03, are involved with the school. U of C professor Eric Cameron was also nominated for an award.

Kick off Stampede with U of C float

On Friday, July 4, the University of Calgary Alumni Association's float will make its debut in the world-famous Calgary Stampede Parade. The 28-by-8 foot structure will be topped with an oversized rotating stack of books and two nine-foot-high sculptures of future alumni gazing optimistically into the future. Making a special appearance this year are the energetic U of C Dino mascots and a group of young future alumni, who will be geared up in their best western wear. Arrive early to find the best seats and cheer on your fellow U of C students, staff, faculty, alumni and future alumni as we show off our pride in the university and Calgary together.

On Tuesday, July 22, more than 25 student-built solar cars will fly across campus to the finish line of the North American Solar Challenge, a competition to design, build and drive solar-powered cars in a 4,000-km race from Dallas, Texas to Calgary. Join us on campus to wave the cars across the finish line, learn about sustainable energy and the environment at our Community Partners Fair and, most importantly, cheer for the U of C Solar Car team as they return home!

Did You Know?

The University of Calgary's new Faculty of Veterinary Medicine graduated its first master's student this month. Larissa Newton, MSc'08, grew up on a ranch just west of Alberta's famous Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump. "Connecting my research with my life on the ranch is important to me," she says. Newton's research, which is focused on infertility in bulls, is something she sees as valuable, with real-world applications.
