$97-million investment in innovation, learningThe government of Alberta is investing $97.1 million to support new and existing capital projects at the U of C, as well as several mechanical and infrastructure upgrades on campus. The investment includes $25 million for the Taylor Family Digital Library (TFDL), matching an earlier donation made by Calgary's Don and Ruth Taylor, for which the facility is named. |

U of C students chosen for international solar home competitionA student-led team from the U of C, SAIT Polytechnic and Mount Royal College has made it into the prestigious Solar Decathlon competition. The Alberta Solar Decathlon Project is the first-ever, all-western Canadian team to successfully enter the biennial international competition to design, build and operate a completely solar-powered home. The U.S. Department of Energy chose the Alberta team's proposal as one of 20 university and college entries selected from around the world to compete in the Solar Decathlon in Washington, D.C. in the fall of 2009. |

Welcoming Waverman to HaskayneDr. Leonard Waverman, a world-renowned expert in the international telecommunications and resource management sectors began his new role as dean of the Haskayne School of Business on Jan. 1. Dr. Waverman has extensive experience in academia and the private sector. He comes to Haskayne from the London Business School where he was Chair of Economics. |

Feb. 7: Dean Al Lucas and the law school's founding dean, Dr. John McLaren will host a gala event in celebration of the faculty's innovative and exciting new space. Feb. 8: The increasing interference between individuals, corporations and countries and the effect it has on the environment has prompted the Haskayne School's 38th Annual Business Day Conference to adopt a "green" theme. "Think Green: The Business of Environment" will focus on sustainability and how businesses and individuals alike can make conscientious decisions to help preserve the environment. During a day that is both interactive and informative, exceptional speakers will share and direct experiences which will allow participants to learn critical success factors directly from prominent business leaders.

Rothney offers total lunar eclipseFeb. 20: The Rothney Astrophysical Observatory (RAO), in partnership with the Royal Astronomical Society and the Telus World of Science, will offer a spectacular view of this celestial event. Alumni are welcome to an evening that will feature talks on eclipse phenomena and sky viewing on our observation terrace. Admission is free, donations gratefully accepted. Gates open at 6:30 pm; umbral eclipse takes place at 6:43 pm; totality runs from 8:01 pm to 8:51 pm, and the event will conclude at 10 pm. In the event of excessive cloud cover or inclement weather, the viewing will be cancelled—please check the website for updates. |

Two rare evenings with the alumna working with the People of FearAlumni have two chances to get insight into the extraordinary work of alumna Susan Smith, BN'75, PhD'95, in an indigenous village in Mexico, also featured in the Winter 2008 issue of U magazine. Feb. 25: Join us for a dynamic presentation on campus as Smith talks about the work and lives of women weavers in the Mexican village of Tlamacazapa, literally meaning "people of fear." The weavers will showcase their work and talk about Caminamos Juntos, the organization Smith founded that aims to alleviate poverty and to improve health and self-sufficiency by assisting indigenous women and youth to attain better life opportunities. Murray Fraser Hall 164, 4 to 5 pm. No RSVP is necessary. Feb. 26: The following evening at the Glenbow Museum, we will host a special alumni reception and presentation delivered by Smith, followed by a viewing of the exhibit Reweaving a Life featuring the work of weavers and artists from Tlamacazapa. The Glenbow will be closed to the public; alumni will have a chance to meet and speak with Susan Smith, the artists and the weavers. The 5:30 pm reception is followed by Smith's presentation at 6:15 pm and the private exhibition viewing runs from 6:45 to 8 pm. |
Feb. 28: Alfie Kohn, an international lecturer and well-known author of 11 books on parenting including "Unconditional Parenting: Beyond Bribes and Threats," will deliver a presentation offering practical advice and demonstrate why the "carrot and stick" method of parenting is not only ineffective but counterproductive. Murray Fraser Hall theatre 162 at 7 pm. Tickets can be purchased for $25 by calling (403) 270-7787.

Canadian Parks for TomorrowMay 8 – 13: Assessing Change, Accomplishment and Challenge in Canadian Parks and Protected Areas is an international conference that will engage Canadians and the world in a dialogue which will provide a clear foundation for improved planning and decision making in Canada and abroad around the future role and direction of parks and protected areas. The 40th anniversary conference is organized in two parts: presentations and discussions at the U of C for the first four days, and field trips to world heritage sites, national and provincial parks and other protected areas and cultural facilities in the Rocky Mountains and Great Plains regions on May 12 – 13. |
