Alumni are role models for star students
Thanks to the support of thousands of alumni and friends
of the University of Calgary, the U of C Alumni Association
has given more than $1.1 million in student awards since
1975. The Alumni Association recently hosted its annual scholarship
dinner, honouring the 37 recipients of alumni scholarships
and bursaries for 2006-07, and giving them a chance to rub
shoulders with association board members, past winners of
the U of C’s Distinguished Alumni Award and members
of the illustrious “Top 40 Alumni.”

Honour U of C’s finest graduates with the
Arch Awards
Last year, we honoured Mary-Wynne Ashford, MD’81,
a globally-recognized advocate for nuclear disarmament,
and Curtis Myden, BSc’99, MD’06, a three-time
Olympian medalist who recently started his orthopaedic

Hundreds enjoy Alumni Holiday Family Skate
More than 200 alumni and their families hit the Olympic
Oval on Sunday, December 10 to enjoy the first annual,
but certainly
not the last, Alumni Holiday Family
Skate. Santa gave out hats to all his little
elves before joining the throngs on the "fastest ice
in the world", proving he doesn't always need Rudolph
to get around. After skating, the kids enjoyed
hot chocolate and A Charlie Brown Christmas while
the adults nursed sore muscles with coffee and cookies. Watch your

Haskayne delivers 40th anniversary calendar

The Haskayne School of Business’s annual calendar got a 40th
anniversary makeover this year. The 2007 edition highlights milestones
in world history over the last 40 years and relates them to significant
events at the b-school and the U of C. Eleven alumni and the school’s
longest-standing dean are profiled in the calendar. Already distributed
to business alumni, non-Haskayne alumni can request a copy be mailed
to you by sending your name and mailing address to alumni@haskayne.ucalgary.ca while
supplies last.

Bull
Also in celebration of the school’s 40th anniversary
in 2007, the Haskayne School of Business recently debuted
the Haskayne “Signature” Teddy Bull. The bull—created
by Martin Herrington, BComm’89, founder and CFO of
California-based The Herrington Teddy Bear Company—is
designed to profile the current Alberta bull market, embody
the pioneering spirit of Calgary and uphold the University
of Calgary crest. This fully-accessorized charmer is sure

“Update Your Wardrobe” contest winner!
Laura Montes, MBT’06, is the winner of the U of C
Alumni Association “Update Your Wardrobe” contest.
We asked all graduates at the November 2006 Convocation to
update their contact information with the alumni office,
with each entry having a chance to win a $500 gift certificate
at Banana Republic, a great gift for those about to enter
the workforce. “It was great to win this Banana Republic
gift card, the perfect graduation/Christmas gift,” said
Laura, now an intern at WestLink Innovation Network. “Thanks,

Researcher grateful for alumni participation
The December Arch-E reported on the research work of Kelly
Piasentin, a U of C PhD candidate in industrial-organizational psychology
studying workplace attitudes. Kelly was conducting an online survey
and many alumni responded to the call to action and completed the survey.
Kelly is now working on the next stage of her study. Thanks to all
who participated!

Volunteering enables alumni to give and grow
The United Nations’ International Volunteer Day
recognizes volunteers worldwide for their contributions
and dedication—among them are more than 11.8 million
people who give more than two billion hours of their time
to Canadian charities each year. Stephen Brown, MBA’96,
is one such volunteer who sought an opportunity to give
back and augment his professional skills at the same time.

Major donation will create new heart of campus
Albertans Don and Ruth Taylor recently announced a donation
of $25 million to the new Taylor Family Digital Library
at the U of C. The gift will be used to create a new learning
hub in the heart of campus. The Taylor gift will also be
used to create the Taylor Quadrangle, an outdoor public
space running east/west across campus.

Master planner hired for West Campus
The U of C has appointed internationally renowned Sasaki
Associates to lead the master planning for the development
of West Campus, an 80-hectare parcel of land owned by the
U of C. The land, approximately a third of the size of
downtown Calgary, overlooks the Bow River valley and runs
east of Shaganappi Trail. It is home to the Alberta Children’s
Hospital, Ronald McDonald House and is across the street
from the new Child Development Centre, scheduled to open
later this year.

Digital U of C archives
A database of images and documents celebrating the U of
C’s 40-year history has been produced and is now accessible
online. It is fully searchable and contains a document describing
events on campus, in Canada and around the world for each
year between 1966 and 2006, along with several archival images
for each year of the University’s history.

Youth leadership conference
The U of C Students' Union is hosting the Stand Up! Youth Leadership
Conference for young leaders and advocates aged 17 to 30 from March
7 to 10. Featuring sessions on various components of leadership
training, world-class speakers and a career fair with local, national
and international companies, Stand Up! will foster skills to help
create positive change. Proudly supported by the Alumni Association
and the U of C's external relations department, Stand Up! will
provide essential skills to tomorrow's leaders. U of C external
relations is proud to offer a $50 discount off the delegate fees
to a limited number of students who are children of U of C alumni.

Shakespeare lectures
Shakespearean scholar and professor emeritus Dr. James Black will
present a series of engaging lectures for the thespian, the drama-lover
and for those who simply want a comfortable forum to learn about
Shakespeare and his work at the U of C’s Monday Night Shakespeare
series this winter and spring. Discover the artistry, the pleasures
and the contemporary relevance of major and lesser-known Shakespearean
plays. Tickets are free, made possible through the generous support
of the Lefebvre Foundation. Lectures are most Mondays until April
2 at Craigie Hall.

Canadian poet and novelist Daphne Marlatt, the 2007 Markin-Flanagan
Distinguished Visiting Writer, reads from Seven Glass
Bowls and a selection of recent poetry on Wednesday,
January 24 at 7:30 pm at the U of C’s Rozsa Centre.
The event is free and open to the public; no RSVP is necessary.
A reception and book-signing follow. Marlatt is in residence
at the U of C from January 15 to February 4 and will be
conducting free individual manuscript consultations. For

37th Annual Business Day Conference
The Haskayne School of Business and the Business Day Group are
holding the 37th Annual Business Day Conference on February 2,
from 8 am to 5 pm at the Fairmont Palliser Hotel. ''Innovation:
A Vision for the Future'' will bring together students, faculty,
corporate reps and business leaders from different sectors to examine
the need for innovation in today’s corporate society. Opening
and closing keynote speakers include Chip Wilson, founder and chairman
of Lululemon Athletica and David Byler, executive VP, natural gas & renewable
energy, Suncor Energy. Full conference package is only $100 and
includes the DBLA dinner banquet on February 1st, breakfast, lunch,
three keynote speakers, panel discussions, break-out sessions and

MSF benefit
International Lights, an organization comprising U of C students,
is organizing a fundraiser gala in support of Médecins Sans
Frontières/ Doctors Without Borders (MSF). The group hopes
to raise $10,000 to provide much-needed funding for vaccination
campaigns, feeding centres, the rebuilding of hospitals, and medicine
programs in various countries. The gala will be on March 31 in
the U of C’s MacEwan Ballroom. Tables of eight are $900 and
individual seats cost $125. The evening includes a silent auction
and formal dinner, as well as entertainment from various cultures.

Corruption forum
The Centre for Public Interest Accounting (CPIA), Development
Studies Club, International Centre, Latin American Research Centre
and the Students’ Union are sponsoring a public forum to
examine the challenges of various types of corruption taking place
around the world. This forum brings together universities, involved
institutions, non-profit organizations and the general public to
discuss, debate and ultimately move forward with this timely and
important topic. It’s a free event with complimentary lunch.

Judges sought for youth science fair
Volunteers are needed to judge the 46th Annual Calgary Youth Science
Fair on Friday, March 16. The Calgary Youth Science Fair is held
annually to promote an interest in science in over 1,000 Calgary
area students. Many students at the fair present outstanding projects
from their school science fair and the best projects go to the
Canada Wide Science Fair in May. Approximately 550 judges are needed.
If you have judged before, you know how enjoyable this small investment
of your time can be. If you have not participated before, a wonderful
experience is in store for you.

Problem gambling destroys
families and lives — and
it has increased significantly in Alberta since the introduction
of video lottery terminals in 1993. Yet only 10 per cent
of those with a gambling problem seek treatment. Thanks
to the work of U of C psychology professor and addictions
expert Dr. David Hodgins, new treatment programs are being
developed to help gamblers reduce or eliminate their habit.
