Alumni contest winner so Hip it hurts
Matthew Ryan, MBA'06, was our lucky
winner of two tickets to see the Tragically Hip play a sold-out
MacEwan Hall on October 28. Matthew won the grand prize
in a recent alumni contest that saw 3,000 graduates update
their contact information with the Alumni Relations office.

Alumni pricing for Peruvian treasures
U of C alumni receive a special discount on admission for
a blockbuster exhibit of gold artifacts called Ancient Peru
Unearthed—Treasures of a Lost Civilization, which received
its North American debut at the Nickle Arts Museum on September
28. The exhibition features precious and unique artifacts
from the pre-Inca Sicán culture of northern Peru.
See amazing gold and ceramic objects—masks, pottery
and ceremonial items—produced by Sicán artists
from 900 to 1300 AD, and only recently unearthed. Alumni
are invited to discover this unique exhibition for the special
price of $9 until January 14, 2007.

Education grad pens book to encourage children’s
play
If you were to ask most people about their happiest childhood
memories, they’d usually mention family time: simple
things, like reading together, playing cards, building
a fort, baking cookies or going on a family camping trip.
Parents should remember that for raising happy, healthy
children, family time stand out, says author, communications
coach and alumna Joan Craven, BEd’75.

Grads find degree opens door to success
Does this sound familiar? You finally finish something,
only to discover you really should have done something
else. That’s how it was for Cecily Woolrich and
Jennifer Brock, both BComm'96. They had just graduated
from the U of C and discovered that they didn’t
want to market oil and gas after all. Instead, they wanted
to follow their passion for interior design.

Speeding up the health care system
Surgeons at the U of C’s Sport Medicine Centre believe
they have a plan that could dramatically reduce waiting lists for
patients with injured knees — a problem they say frustrates
both patients and doctors.

Bringing design innovation to capital projects
The U of C is hiring world-renowned architects to partner with
local firms and bring visionary design to its $1.5-billion capital
expansion, a partnership model that is unique in Canada. Montreal-based
Saucier + Perrotte will work with Calgary firm Kasian Architecture,
Interior Design and Planning on the Campus Calgary Digital Library
(CCDL), the $140-million facility scheduled to open in 2009.
Philadelphia-based KieranTimberlake Associates will work with
Calgary’s Cohos Evamy (in association with Busby Perkins
+ Will) on the $283-million building to house ISEEE, the Institute
for Sustainable Energy, Environment and Economy, as well as on
the first phase of the $300-million Experiential Learning Centre.

“Kill Bill” in the lab of love
Join Dr. Susan Boon, an associate professor in the Department
of Psychology, for "A Taste of Their Own Medicine: Tales of
Revenge in Intimate Relationships", next in the Ruby Tuesdays
40th anniversary series on November 21, from 6 to 8 pm at The
Siding Cafe & Bar in Art Central (111, 100 – 7th Avenue
SW). Take part in an evening of listening, opinions and conversation
on the lab of love, and what can follow an unhappy breakup. For

Teacher education in times of war
The Faculty of Education’s 2006 Distinguished Lecture features
Dr. David Jardine, who will explore how teacher education, in times
of war, is in a fragile but powerful position to interrupt this
war-consciousness on behalf of human freedom and peace. The lecture
is free and open to the public: Thursday, November 2, 7 – 8
pm in the Alberta Room, 2nd Floor, U of C Dining Centre. The event
is part of the international conference “How Might Teacher

ESL issues hot topic for PD seminar
What are the challenges facing students in Calgary schools who
speak English as a second language (ESL) or English as an additional
language (EAL) and how can teachers help them achieve their
full potential? These issues will be the topic of discussion at
a free Professional Development Initiative (PDI) seminar on campus
on Thursday, November 9 from 7-9 pm. Guest speaker Professor
Hetty Roessingh will share her expertise and resources for
successfully working with ESL students, including a website she
has developed to help teachers assess vocabulary levels of K-12
ESL students.

The Haskayne School of Business and the Haskayne Alumni Chapter
will celebrate and honour 2006 Management Alumni Excellence (MAX)
Award recipient David Byler, BComm’78, at a gala on Thursday,

David is Executive VP, Natural Gas & Renewable Energy of
Suncor Energy Inc. He has contributed tirelessly to Suncor's
vision of sustainable energy, is the current chair of the CEO

The Centre for Public Interest Accounting (CPIA), Development
Studies Club, International Centre, the Latin American Research
Centre and the Students’ Union are sponsoring a free public forum

Getting your head examined
The Faculty of Education’s Division of Applied Psychology
is offering high-quality psychological assessment, prevention and
treatment services for children, adolescents, adults and families
in the Calgary region—and helping to fund scholarships for
grad students at the same time. The U of C’s Applied Psychological
and Educational Services (U-CAPES) offers a range of clinical services
to the public as well professional development and research services
for government, private and community groups. Revenue generated
through service delivery is used to fund scholarships to support
graduate students during their practicum and internship experiences.

A University of Calgary professor
is pioneering practical uses of virtual reality technology
to help Alberta’s STARS (Shock Trauma Air Rescue
Society) medical crews get a feel for what it will be like
to work in two new state-of-the-art helicopters they won’t
receive for another year. Dr. Richard Levy, an architect
and urban planning professor in the Faculty of Environmental
Design, teamed up with STARS design engineer Keith Rach,
MDes'02, to turn Rach's 3-D computer model of the new AgustaWestland
139 helicopter into a life-sized virtual reality simulation
of the new air ambulances.
