Institutional Sustainability Strategy Action Plan 2025-2028
Articulates how UCalgary will act on its commitment to sustainability, aligned with the University of Calgary’s Ahead of Tomorrow Strategic Plan.
GHG Emissions Reductions
UCalgary continues to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions through a range of initiatives and programs aimed at improving energy efficiency and increasing the use of clean, renewable energy sources, such as on site solar photovoltaic (PV) generation.
In 2025, UCalgary exceeded its Climate Action Plan 35% emissions reduction target by achieving a 43% GHG reduction relative to its 2008 baseline. The goal was reached ahead of schedule, despite significant growth in both campus population and building floor space. This reduction represents more than 103,800 tonnes of GHG emissions, equivalent to removing nearly 31,800 passenger vehicles from the road for a full year. In 2024/25, with a 40% increase in institutional population and 19% increase in institutional gross building area, UCalgary achieved a 60% reduction in total GHG emissions per institutional population and a 52% reduction in total GHG emissions per square meters of building space relative to the 2008 base year.
*Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, taking into account operational and energy efficiency conservation measures through fiscal year 2024/25.
Campus partners
Sustainability is part of UCalgary campus life. To create a sustainable campus, various units around UCalgary actively engage in following sustainable standards and maintaining safe and healthy environments.
Guiding Strategies and Action Plans
UCalgary's Sustainability Action Plan (2025-2028) is guided by the Institutional Sustainability Strategy, which was developed in 2025, and the 2019 Climate Action Plan.
Institutional Sustainability Strategy
The Institutional Sustainability Strategy is a roadmap for continuous improvement in our pursuit of excellence and leadership in sustainability through three interdependent frameworks: Advancing Sustainability Education and Research, Engagement for Sustainability and Sustainability in Administration and Operations.
Climate Action Plan (2019)
The Climate Action Plan is our roadmap for deep, sustained greenhouse gas reductions as we transition toward a carbon-neutral campus, shaped by four interconnected focus areas: New Building Innovation, Existing Building Energy Retrofits, Green Power, and District Energy System Decarbonization.
