UNIVERSITY NEWS New UofC Masters Degree: Energy and the Environment

The University of Calgary has approved a new Masters Degree in Energy and the Environment to be taught in Quito Ecuador starting Nov 4,1996. This is a joint project with the U of C, CIDA and OLADE (The Organization of Latin American Departments of Energy) and is designed for senior decision makers in energy departments of the 26 Latin American and Caribbean countries. The program is designed in 3 week modules and can be completed in 14 months of intensive work. It was developed by faculty members from Environmental Design, Management, Engineering and Law, and officials from OLADE. The students must be bilingual in Spanish and English because courses are taught by U of C and Latin American faculty members in either language. Courses include a one week introductory framework; courses on renewable energy, nonrenewable energy, and energy system planning and modelling; air, water, land and solid waste problems and solutions; ecology and environmental chemistry; environmental impact assessment; environmental management; strategic environmental planning and management; project management; and law. A one-week recapitulation of interdisciplinary skills and knowledge(Like EVDS 702). Students will then have one month to complete an individual project which they have been developing during the year. The program includes material based upon the experience in the past 25 years in EVDS with such interdisciplinary degrees. Bill Ross will teach the EIA course. Dixon Thompson will be one of the team members teaching the introduction, and recapitulation courses, the interdisciplinary project, and the courses in environmental management, and ecology and environmental chemistry. A number of shorter seminars much like our block weeks will also be offered. Like other U of C courses, these are available to qualified U of C students, with the permission of the instructor. Of course, students have to be able to get to Quito.
