During the Winter Session of the 1993/94 school year, the first and second year architecture students participated in a weekend design charette. The project was to design a pedestrian gate for the Inglewood Wildlands Park, a reclaimed contaminated site. The park is adjacent to the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary and was formerly the site of a PetroCanada Oil Refinery.
The Rotary Club of Calgary Olympic and surrounding community selected several student designs for construction. The first gate to be completed was designed by Karla Berg who is now a fourth year Environmental Science student. The gate is made from oilfield pipe and is painted in colours typically found in oil and gas facilities. It is located along the west border of the park, near the community centre. Karla was honoured at a Rotarian dinner held last January and presented with a life-time membership at the Inglewood Wildlands Park. A second gate, designed by Kirsten Smith (fourth year Architecture) was recently completed and is located at the northwest corner of the park, on 9th Avenue S.E., adjacent to the tennis courts.
