Elaine Baydak, M.Sc., P.Chem.

Research
Associate Main Research: Interfacial properties of asphaltene emulsion systems, including interfacial tensions, surface pressure isotherms, coalescence and emulsion stability. Emulsion layers & rag layer formation during froth treatment processes. Characterization of bitumen and oils by SARA fractionation, distillation, molecular weight, density. Elaine trained graduate students and was research technologist for various projects at HOPP. Other Projects: Improving the oil sand bitumen extraction process (hot, warm & cold water processing), sometimes by chemical means, & determining the mechanisms for good oil recovery by interfacial properties of bitumen and bitumen froth systems. Education & Experience: M.Sc. (Colloid Chemistry), University of Calgary, and B.Sc. Honors (Chemistry), University of Regina. Elaine was a researcher at Petroleum Recovery Institute (Calgary) and worked in the crop protection industry at Hoechst Canada Inc. (Regina) before joining the University of Calgary. Elaine is a Professional Chemist, Alberta (ACPA).
