What is WWViews?

WWViews is an international public consultation project on global warming. Over 40 countries will took part, with 100 citizens in each country sharing their opinions on climate policy. WWViews aims to let ordinary citizens take part in COP15, and is the first global project of this kind.

What is COP15?

COP15 is the United Nations climate summit which took place in Copenhagen from December 7-18, 2009. Ministers from more than 170 countries participated, as well as thousands of other participants consisting of government officials, representatives of NGO's, business and industry. The goal of the Danish hosts was to reach a binding global climate agreement that will apply to the period after 2012 when Kyoto Protocol expires.

When and where was the WWViews consultation held?

The Canadian consultation was held in Calgary on September 26, 2009. Similar consultations will be held in countries around the globe on the same date. Results will be made available to the public throughout the day on the WWViews International website: http://www.wwviews.org/

Who is involved?

The Canadian consultation was led by a team from the University of Calgary, along with the project's Advisory Board. See Project Team and Advisory Committee for more details. WWViews Canada was funded mainly by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. The international project was spearheaded by the Danish Board of Technology (the Office of Technology Assessment for the Danish Parliament).

What is the purpose of the project?

The goal is to allow citizens from around the world to make their voices heard on key issues that will be discussed at the COP15 summit. WWViews aims to create a direct route for public views to become part of climate policy negotiations.

WWViews results will be conveyed directly to COP15 delegates in Copenhagen. A final report from the International and Canadian proceedings was sent to consultation participants, policy-makers, NGOs and industry leaders.

How were participants chosen?

Participants were chosen from a random sample of names. Letters of invitation were sent out, and respondents will then be asked to answer questions regarding their demographic profile. Final participants were selected to achieve a balanced demographic representation.

What kind of questions were asked?

Questions were determined by the Danish Board of Technology, and reflected the major topics that discussed at COP15. Participants were asked to vote for the answer that best reflects their view.
