NO-SHOW / LATE CANCELLATION FEE. If you must cancel, please do so at least 2 hours prior to your appointment time. Failure to show up or failure to cancel will result in a warning the first time it happens. The second time it happens you will not be allowed to use the Writing Support Services for one year.

What happens in a Writing Support appointment?

In a Writing Support appointment, students can:

  • discuss their writing process and learn strategies to write more effectively
  • get advice on writing research papers and handouts on how to document sources
  • work with a tutor on an ongoing basis to improve essay structure, paragraph development, writing style, grammar, and punctuation
  • get help with English as a second language

Writing Support Services is not a proofreading service. Although Writing Support instructors respond to students' general questions about assignments in progress, they do not engage in a detailed review or editing of drafts.

Getting Writing Support Help via E-Mail

If you are a U of Calgary student, you can get Writing Support help via e-mail by sending your questions to wconline@ucalgary.ca If you're working on a piece of writing (but not the full paper), you can include it as an attachment (preferably in MS Word).
We aim for -- but can't always guarantee -- a turn-around time of less than a week on e-mail requests for help, so it's best to send in your questions well before a paper is due.

Because Writing Support Services instructors spend a maximum of 30 minutes on each e-mail consultation, you can make the most of your time by:

  • providing your UCID number and name
  • providing specific questions about grammar, sentence structure, citations, etc.

Please note: we will not review complete papers.

The more information you provide in your email, the more quickly you will get feedback; if you don't provide enough information, your tutor may have to write you back to request more information.

Appointments cannot be booked through wconline@ucalgary.ca
