Grant MacEachern, Alumnus
Learning how to think, not what to think.
Grant MacEachern came to the University of Calgary in 1989. His original plan was to get his BComm. Instead, his interest was piqued in a first-year Canadian politics class and he graduated with a BA in Political Science in 1993.
“University gives you the opportunity to change, to do something different,” he says. “Having a political science background has changed the way I look at the world.”
MacEachern was active outside the classroom too. “Extracurricular activities provide exposure to new ideas and that’s what university is all about.”
After seventeen years, MacEachern’s ties to U of C remain strong. He’s been involved with the U of C alumni board and is just finishing up his second three-year term as alumni representative on the board of governors.
MacEachern finds time to give back to his U of C whenever he can and is a community champion for post secondary education. “Those four years were so transformative for me,” he says. “Even if I just help just one student each year, it’s worth it.”

Best and brightest…
Inspired by the positive spirit of the Vancouver Olympics - we are celebrating our own best and brightest. Starting this week, we’ll profile people in the U of C community – faculty, students, staff and alumni by asking them to share what they are most proud of and what they envision for the future. Suggestions for future profiles or comments are welcome at ucpeople@ucalgary.ca If you haven’t yet nominated someone for a U Make a Difference Award – you have until March 23.
