Great Ideas!

This section contains suggestions and tips about homemade household and gardening products that are people and environmentally friendly.

  1. Household Tips

    • Instead of using commercial sheets in the dryer, form aluminum foil into a ball and toss into the dryer with your clothes. This eliminates static the scent-free way.
    • If you do use dryer sheets, use the unscented kind and don't throw them out after the wash is dry. Use them to clean computer screens. They dust and remove static on the screens.
    • When cleaning windows, use vinegar and newspaper instead of a commercial window cleaner.
    • Use baking soda, a soft cloth and a little water to clean tarnished silverware, silver jewellery and old silver coins.
    • Baking soda is an excellent choice for removing odours.
    • Baking soda cleans a bath tub and it works on counter tops to remove stains.
    • To clean wood floors, use ½ cup of vinegar to a gallon of water.
    • This recipe was submitted as a bathroom and kitchen cleaner. In a clean spray bottle combine:
      • ½ tsp. Liquid dish soap
      • 1 tsp. Lemon juice
      • ½ tsp. Baking soda
      • 1 tsp. Borax
      • 2 cups water

  2. Gardening Tips

    • To control aphids, add a tablespoon of cooking oil and a tablespoon of dish soap to a gallon of water. Put in a clean spray bottle and spray your plants.
    • Saucers of beer can be used in the garden to get rid of slugs. They are attracted to it and it kills them.
    • Need a natural weed killer? Try this mixture:
      • One litre of vinegar
      • ¼ cup of salt
      • 2 tsp. Liquid dish soap
Place in a spray bottle or garden sprayer and spray away. Great for driveways and cracks in sidewalks.
