Podcasting improves teaching
and learning
The University of Calgary will be the
first university in the country to introduce
podcasting on a large scale when it launches
four courses in the spring and summer
featuring the iPod as a teaching tool.
“Utilizing podcasts means providing
educational material that is portable,
functional, relevant, and convenient for both
faculty and students,” says David Johnston,
the U of C’s director of e-strategy for Student
and Academic Services. “We are taking

Podcasting allows sound files, such as
music or class lectures, to be distributed over
the Web and then played back at the
listener’s convenience. The U of C will
introduce podcasting in four courses that
involve about 700 students in four faculties.
“I think this is really cool,” says Ryan
Cameron, a 20-year-old, third-year student
who is pursuing a double major in computer
science and English. “There are always a few
good points made in every class where you
wish you could just write the whole thing
down, but you can’t. But if it’s podcast, you
can listen to it over and over, and wherever
you want.”
