Network society, social media and political changes underway in North Africa
a) Social networks (mobile telephone, SMS, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, the blogosphere) played a fundamental role in the organization of the demonstrations in Tunisia and Egypt during the revolutions of 2010-2011. They continue to have a role to play in other countries where revolution is still raging, like Libya and Yemen, as well as in countries where protests are just beginning such as Morocco and Syria. A speaker can discuss the role and use of social and mobile networks in social mobilization (digital activism).
b) On the other hand, little attention has been paid to how governments are using these technologies to enhance their legitimacy and demonstrate their accountability in response to the newly empowered citizenry. How are the same technologies being used as a tool to facilitate the inclusion of citizen perspectives in redefining governance, justice and security arrangements in a context of reconstruction and reform?

His latest book, Climate Wars, is a ground-breaking investigation of how nations will behave when global warming really strikes home. Badly, of course, but HOW badly depends on how hot, how soon -- and the game is not yet lost. There are opportunities as well as dangers, and despair is just self-indulgence.
