There are many funding, research, volunteer and work opportunities abroad. The list below is not exhaustive but is a sample of what is available. We do not promote or monitor organizations under these categories, unless indicated otherwise.

 


Funding Highlights 

 

University International Grants Committee

Through funding provided by the Vice-Provost (International), the University International Grants Committee (UIGC) promotes the overall internationalization goals of the University through the distribution of project grants to be used for international purposes.

Awards are open to all regular full time faculty and staff who hold University appointments.

Full time graduate and undergraduate may also apply for project grants, but must obtain the signature of their Dean or Department Head, or if the project is of a non academic nature must have the project sponsored by the Students' Union or Graduate Students' Academic or an administrative unit at the University of Calgary.

Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship Program
The Canadian Bureau for International Education, the program administrator for Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT) International Scholarships program is pleased to announce that additional funding is available for the current Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship Program (CCSP) 2011-2012.

The additional funding is to support scholarships for Master’s and PhD students from India who can begin their studies/research in Canada by March 15, 2012. The Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship Program provides scholarships for study or research at the graduate level.Scholarships are valued at $7,500 CAD for 4 months and $10,000 CAD for 5-6 months. Foreign Government Awards—France
The Government of France, through the Office for Science and Technology at the Embassy of France in Canada offers scholarships to increase the mobility of Canadian students and post-doctoral researchers to France. The Office for Science and Technology at the Embassy of France in Canada offers scholarships for study in France at the master's level, doctoral or post-doctoral level.  The competition is open to all disciplines (natural sciences, engineering, humanities, social sciences and the arts).  The scholarships are intended exclusively for applicants from Canada residing outside of the province of Québec.

The award includes:
·monthly allowance of approximately 1060€ *;
·France round-trip, economy-class airfare (in the case of renewal of the scholarship, only the first trip is supported);
·insurance;
·fees for the academic program; and
·with registration, visa matters and finding accommodation. 

Scholarships are awarded for:
·to four months maximum at the master's level (research or further education);
·to eight months maximum at the doctoral and post-doctoral level; or
·to eight months for a PhD under joint supervision (cotutelle). The length of stay may be eight consecutive months with one paid roundtrip airfare or two stays of four months. In this case only the first round trip is supported.

Competency in French is not a requirement at the time of application.

Export Development Canada (EDC) International Business Scholarship
EDC’s International Business Scholarships – 30 awards valued at $4,000

2nd, 3rd or 4th year (non-graduating) bachelor degree students of international business or business combined with sustainability/environmental studies.  Must be continuing bachelor degree studies in the 2012-2013 academic year to be eligible.  Full criteria are available at www.edc.ca/scholarships.

DAAD Programs: RISE and RISE Professional (Germany)
RISE (Research Internships in Science and Engineering) and RISE professional have established outstanding opportunities to combine serious research with a rewarding study-abroad experience. The programs are targeted to students from the fields of engineering, physics, chemistry, biology, earth sciences (geology) and related disciplines.

RISE undergrads have the opportunity to work on cutting edge research projects at top research institutions (e.g., Max-Planck-Institutes) and universities in Germany. Students are paired with German PhD students in a unique mentoring partnership to ensure immediate integration into hands-on lab work and a built-in social network with an excellent opportunity to develop new technical skills. RISE professional is designed for recent graduates, Master's and PhD students, and alumni of the RISE program who are matched with a well-known German company, where they gain insight into the professional applications of science and engineering and develop practical skills. Canadian Membership Development Fund-Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute

Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute is pleased to announce a new grant initiative, the Membership Development Fund (MDF) for its Canadian member institutions. The objective of this modest funding is to assist Shastri Canadian member institutions with the organization of events to support the promotion and expansion of India Studies and related activities in their institutions.

Value:  Each member institution will receive up to $500 CAD.
A total of $10,000 CAD is available for 2011-12, which will be available in 4 quarters.
Eligibility:

The member representatives of Canadian member institutions are eligible to apply for this grant on behalf of their respective institutions.  For a current list of member institutions and members please click here.

Please provide the following supporting documentation with the application for the MDF grant:  a brief description and schedule of the planned activities, expected outcomes of the event, a budget

Application Deadline:  This grant will be available up to March 31, 2012. Application will be accepted each quarter as per the below deadlines. Up to $2500 CAD will be disbursed each quarter.

Online registration system for Canadian professors on sabbatical leave 

Please forward this information and encourage your professors on sabbatical leave wishing to go abroad to fill out the online registration system for Canadian professors on sabbatical leave (CPSL) (www.amb-canada.fr/university/sabbatical).  In addition to the objective of promoting Canadian academic excellence abroad, both nationally and regionally, one of the goals of this password-protected Extranet is to encourage inter-institutional linkages between Canadian and foreign postsecondary institutions. This system is available to Centres for Canadian Studies abroad wishing to invite Canadian scholars to give conferences at their respective universities.
