There are many funding, research, volunteer and work opportunities abroad. The list below is not exhaustive but is a sample of what is available. We do not promote or monitor organizations under these categories, unless indicated otherwise.
University International Grants Committee (UIGC)
Through funding provided by the Vice-Provost (International), the University International Grants Committee (UIGC) promotes the overall internationalization goals of the University through the distribution of project grants to be used for international purposes.
Awards are open to all regular full time faculty and staff who hold University appointments.
Full time graduate and undergraduate may also apply for project grants, but must obtain the signature of their Dean or Department Head, or if the project is of a non academic nature must have the project sponsored by the Students' Union or Graduate Students' Academic or an administrative unit at the University of Calgary.

Calls for applications are now open! There are 3 programs offered:
1) Scholarships of the Embassy of France: up to 8 months (monthly allowance + airplane ticket)
The scholarships will be awarded in priority to PhD students involved in a joint “cotutelle” PhD program. Master’s and “non-cotutelle” PhD students as well as postdocs are also eligible for study or research internship in France;

OECD Fellowship Programme
The OECD is launching the Thomas J. Alexander Fellowship Programme to support individuals in conducting quantitative, evidence-based research on education, particularly in emerging economies. The programme, named after a former director of the OECD’s Education, Employment, Labour and Social Affairs department, will provide funding for up to one year, including time spent at OECD headquarters in Paris. Fellows, who will be encouraged to link their research to education policy and practice, particularly on equity in education, will be selected from among individuals working at universities, research institutes, government agencies or professional organisations. Candidates will be selected on the basis of the originality, potential, and scientific rigour of their proposals. Fellows will be expected to produce a publishable research paper or report at the end of their fellowship. Only online applications will be accepted.

DAAD News: RISE online registration now open
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is pleased to announce that for summer 2013 we will again offer our internship programs: RISE (Research Internships in Science and Engineering) and RISE professional. RISE has established itself as an outstanding opportunity to combine serious research with a rewarding study-abroad experience. These programs are targeted to students from the fields of engineering, physics, chemistry, biology, earth sciences (geology) and related disciplines.
RISE undergrads have the opportunity to work on cutting edge research projects at top research institutions (e.g., Max-Planck-Institutes) and universities in Germany. Students are paired with German PhD students in a unique mentoring partnership to ensure immediate integration into hands-on lab work and a built-in social network with an excellent opportunity to develop new technical skills. Competition Re-Opened: Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program
The Government of Canada is pleased to announce that additional funding is available through the Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP) for the current 2012-2013 academic year.
The additional funding is to support scholarships for graduate students conducting research from the following countries only:
CARICOM: Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Kitts, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos;
Central America: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama; or South America: Colombia, Peru.
Students must arrive in Canada by March 15, 2012.

DAAD Undergraduate Scholarship to Germany 2013/2014
Highly qualified undergraduate students are invited to apply for scholarships funding study, senior thesis research and/or internships in Germany. The goal of this program is to support study abroad in Germany and at German universities. Preference will be given to students whose projects or programs are based at and organized by a German university. Scholarships are available either as part of an organized study abroad program or as part of an individual, student-designed study abroad semester or year.
Be aware, that the deadline of January 31st 2013 is for students wishing to study in Germany between fall 2013 through July 2014.

CONAHEC Conference – Edmonton 2013 – Call for Proposals
Stakeholders interested in international higher education collaboration are invited to submit presentation proposals for CONAHEC's 15th North American Higher Education Conference. CONAHEC's conference "Towards a Sustainable Future: The Role of International Education" will take place from May 1-3, 2013 in one of Canada's greenest cities, Edmonton, Alberta.
This exciting event will focus on how higher education institutions can contribute throught their daily international engagement activities to creating more equitable and sustainable societies. While higher education institutions have been at the cutting edge of many technological developments, and have served as spaces for our communities to grow and develop, achieving sustainable societies is a goal which should guide all of our activities. The role of international education in this should not be underestimated.
We invite the sharing of innovative frameworks and approaches implemented by higher education institutions to provide a locally relevant global dimension within their teaching, research and public service activities, with special emphasis in their consideration of and contribution to sustainability. Case studies and original research will be considered. CONAHEC extends a special invitation to representatives of Canadian First Nations, Native American tribes and indigenous peoples of other countries. In addition, we encourage perspectives from business, government, non-profit, primary and secondary education.

2013 China Government Scholarships
Each year, the Government of China provides 5 full and 10 partial scholarships enabling Albertans to study in China. Alberta high school graduates, post-secondary students and scholars wishing to participate in Chinese language studies, academic study at the undergraduate or graduate level, or research are eligible. The language of instruction is primarily Chinese; however, the program may sponsor and recommend remedial Chinese language studies for applicants who are not applying for the Chinese language study program.
Applications are now being accepted for the 2013 Chinese Government Scholarship program with studies commencing in September 2013. Deadline to apply is December 14, 2012. Please find attached:

2013 EU-Canada Young Journalist Award
The European Union Delegation to Canada is pleased to announce the 2013 edition of the EU-Canada Young Journalist Award.
The EU-Canada Young Journalist Award (YJA) was created in 2001 to recognize outstanding journalistic potential among Canadian students. Each year, three students are selected to participate in a one-week study tour of various EU institutions and the Canadian Mission to the EU in Brussels. Winners will also have the chance to attend a Midday EU press briefing. Prior to the trip, which is paid for by the European Union, winners will be invited to an awards ceremony in Ottawa in May 2013, an event attended by senior journalists, government officials and the diplomatic corps.
The YJA is open to students in all Canadian universities and higher education establishments. Applicants are invited to make a submission focusing on current issues facing the European Union or EU-Canada relations no later than: Monday, 11 February 2013

EDC announces its 13th annual competition for international business scholarships
Export Development Canada (EDC) today launched its 13th annual International Business Scholarship competition, created and designed to develop the next generation of globally-minded business leaders.
EDC’s scholarship program offers up to 30 $4,000 scholarships annually, 25 of these for outstanding undergraduate students in international business and five for those in programs that combine business with environmental or sustainability studies.

Brazil-Canada 3.0 Conference
In April 2012 in Stratford, Ontario, a delegation of over 30 Brazilians, led by Brazil’s Joint Science and Technology Committee co-chair of the Canada and Brazil Framework Agreement for Cooperation in Science, Technology and Innovation, took part in the Canada-Brazil 3.0 Conference. Canada 3.0 is Canada’s premier Digital Media annual event where policy makers across industry, government and academia converge.
Brazil is reciprocating and has announced “Brazil-Canada 3.0” to be held in Joao Pessoa, Paraiba in Brazil from December 2 to 4, 2012. The conference will have four tracks including: Connectivity and Internet Governance; Digital Content; Development of Talent; and Digital Entrepreneurship.

Jean Monnet funding programme
2013 Call for Proposals for the Jean Monnet Program is now open.
In the scope of the Lifelong Learning Program, the first key activity of the Jean Monnet Program aims to increase knowledge about European Integration studies by encouraging teaching, research, reflection and debate in higher education institutions within and outside the European Union.
European Integration studies comprise the study of the origins and evolution of the European Communities and the European Union, including the analysis of the internal and external aspects of European integration, the European Union's role in the dialogue between peoples and cultures.
The Jean Monnet Program brings together a network of 1,650 professors, reaching audiences of 250,000 students every year.
The deadline for the proposal submission is February 15, 2013.

Engaging Canada Conference on Higher Education in India and Canada: Opportunities and Challenges
Conference date is 19th December 2012. The Conference/ Seminar will broadly try to generate discussion and awareness around the following.
1. Higher Education in India- present status and the way forward to take advantage of the strength of Canadian institutions; role of different bodies/ Institutions in regulating and improving collaboration and exchange between the two countries

We would be happy to have a person from Alberta province speak on the “Opportunities in Alberta and the challenges for Indian Institutions and students” if anyone is likely to be in Mumbai on that date. If there a person from any of the Universities in Alberta who is likely to be in Mumbai on the date, we would be happy to have him speak about the Institution.

Also continuing this year is RISE worldwide. German students in the early stages of their studies who have the ambition to work abroad and gain hands-on research experience in their fields will be matched with researchers worldwide who wish to engage in a meaningful cooperation with a young German scholar. These German interns receive a DAAD scholarship to help cover living expenses and travel costs. Participating hosts receive invaluable assistance with their own work-they profit both professionally and personally from contact with the intern, having the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of the culture, lifestyle and higher education system in Germany.
Research groups interested in hosting a German research assistant in the summer of 2013 are invited to participate in RISE worldwide and to submit project proposals at:

Partnership: Crops for the Future Research Centre (CFFRC)
CFFRC is the first-of-its-kind centre with the global mandate for research and development on underutilised plants for food and non-food uses. CFFRC is a unique public/private partnership between the Government of Malaysia and the University of Nottingham with the freedom to drive innovative methods of research and establish partnerships with global stakeholders.
CFFRC seeks collaboration on research activities that contribute to improved food and non-food crops with nutritional or market potential, developing novel food and non-food products, promoting academic and student research programmes in higher learning institutions and producing new curricula and learning materials on underutilised crops

International Space University
2013 Space Studies Program (SSP)
The Canadian Foundation for the International Space University (CFISU) is a private, non-profit charitable organization that promotes the programs of the International Space University (ISU) in Canada. Depending on the level of financial support in any given year, the CFISU annually awards six to eight full or partial scholarships to Canadians to attend the ISU’s Space Studies Program.
Deadline: January 31, 2013 by 4 p.m. (EST)
Fields of study: By virtue of the interdisciplinary nature of ISU, candidates from all fields of study are encouraged to apply.
Eligibility:
- Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent Canadian residents.
- Applicants must be proficient in English, the working language of the ISU (an ISU requirement).
- All applicants must have completed an undergraduate degree or equivalent at the time of application.
Applicants must:
- be enrolled or accepted in a Master’s, PhD or professional degree-granting program; or
