UCalgary moving ahead with designation and consultation process

Response to TUCFA’s request to designate MaPS staff as members of the academic staff

The Faculty Association (“TUCFA”) sent a letter on April 12, 2018 to the chair of the Board of Governors requesting that the Board designate all MaPS at the university as members of the academic staff, except those few who might be excluded from any union (e.g. due to a role bargaining with the Faculty Association). TUCFA’s request can be found at http://www.ucalgary.ca/maps/.

The Board is empowered by the Post-Secondary Learning Act (PSLA) to designate categories of employees as academic staff members. However, this decision involves a highly fact-specific undertaking that requires due consideration and diligence.

On May 25, 2018, the Human Resources and Governance Committee of the Board of Governors delegated to the Provost and Vice-President Academic (PVPA) and Vice-President Finance and Services (VPFS) the authority to:

1. Develop a process compliant with the requirements of the PSLA to review the request; and

2. Implement that process to review MaPS positions and prepare recommendations to the Committee with respect to a decision to designate MaPS as academic staff.
