C02 levels in the atmosphere are climbing steadily higher. Some believe this is having a devastating effect on humans and nature, while others argue that the threat has been overstated. Is this the moment for a bold international treaty to curb carbon emissions? Or, are the social and economic costs of reducing C02 emissions too high in world where a billion people live on a dollar or less a day?
Just days before the United Nation's historic Copenhagen summit the Munk Debates will tackle one of the great public policy questions of our time: how should the world respond to climate change?
The purpose of the Munk Debates is to provide Canadians with an opportunity to hear some of the world's leading thinkers and doers debate the important issues facing the world and Canada. An all but a ‘lost art' today, formal public debates were once central to Canada's political culture. Debates in Parliament and public places drew large audiences and were closely followed by the media. In our present-day era of political spin and grandstanding, the Munk Debates seek to re-establish formal debate as means to encourage more vigorous, relevant and rational public discourse. The Munk Debates put a modern democratic twist on the traditional public debate by having the audience at each event vote on the resolution at the debate's outset and followed by a second vote at the debate's conclusion.
