The University of Calgary's Biosafety and Procedures Manual has been prepared for the benefit of those who handle or work in proximity to potentially infectious biological agents.
The Biosafety and Procedures Manual has been designed to provide guidance to ensure both a safe working / learning environment and to assist in the requirement for compliance to federal and provincial legislation / guidelines pertaining to biohazards.
The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) has legislative authority over the handling, storage, and importation of biohazardous materials affecting humans only. The Laboratory Biosafety Guidelines (3rd Edition, 2004) is the guiding document for the use, handling and storage of human pathogens. The University of Calgary considers the requirements of the LBG 2004 as the industry standard, and the minimum standard when dealing with human pathogens or PIMs at the University.
The Containment Standards for Veterinary Facilities provided by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is the standard used at the University of Calgary for all work involving animal and zoonotic pathogens and PIMS.
