University of Calgary

Application Process for New Applicants

Step 1 - Information Sessions

All potential Community Advisor candidates were invited to attend information sessions in December and January.

These sessions consisted of an in-depth discussion and presentation about the position.  Those that attended learned about the duties of a CA, heard what Residence Education Team training is like, and had the opportunity to speak with current CAs about their experiences and about the application and interview process.

On your application form, please indicate which information session you have attended.

Step 2 - Application

The Community Advisor application process for the 2012-2013 academic year is now closed.  The text below is for information purposes only.

Application packages must be completed and submitted to the Residence Services front desk (Dining Centre 01) by January 23, 2012 at 4:30pm.

You do not have to be a current residence student to apply as a new Community Advisor, nor do you need to have lived in residence at any university before (though residence life experience certainly is an asset).

If you are living outside of Calgary and you cannot drop off your application in person, please PDF and email your application package to Jason Bowers at jfbowers@ucalgary.ca.

Step 3 - Carousel Interviews

If we select your application to proceed, you will be invited to the Carousel Interview that you indicated in your initial application (note there are two days scheduled for Carousel, with four sessions in total - you will be required to attend one of these four sessions).

Carousel is a group based interview where you rotate through different workstations and activities as well as a individual interview with a Senior member of the Residence Education Team and a professional staff member. No preparation on your part (apart from personal reflection on your reasons for applying for the position) is required. Your group will be led by a current member of the Residence Education Team through each station and you will be evaluated throughout the four-hour session. Carousel is therefore a fun and interactive way for us to get to know you!

Carousel Interviews for Community Advisor candidates will take place on January 28 & 29 (meet in Science Theatres 131), either in the morning or in the afternoon.

All Community Advisor candidates will be informed of their Carousel date and time slot via email by Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at 4:30pm.

Step 4 - Decisions

This is often the most challenging part of the hiring process: building the right team. A cohesive Residence Education Team needs diversity: different people with different skills make us strong.

Utilizing what we have learned about you from the Application, Carousel and individual interview, the Residence Life Coordinators will select the Residence Education Team for the upcoming year. We will also select alternate candidates who may be offered a position during the summer or even during the following year as staff teams change.

On Friday, February 17, 2012, you will receive a decision letter by Registered Mail at Residence Services for current residence students.  For students who live off-campus, letters will be available at the Residence Services front desk.  Letters should be available by noon on that day.
