Global Village - Living Without Borders

Global Village is an interactive residence community specifically designed to provide a multicultural living experience and the opportunity to gain international experience right here on campus.

The beginning of the Global Village experience lies in the accommodations assignments strategy for selected students. One international student and one Canadian student will be paired to live together in a two bedroom suite.  Each floor in Global Village has a communal kitchen and lounge area, designed to foster maximal interaction.

Learning Outcomes:

Living in Global Village is a unique experience in which the students, programs and environment are designed to accomplish three key learning outcomes:

  • Increasing students’ multicultural awareness. This includes a broad exposure to different cultures and cultural sharing as well as reflection on the student’s own culture and its characteristics.
  • Global and local awareness. In order to be engaged both internationally and in their home communities, it is important for students to be aware of the issues and concerns impacting others across the globe and to reflect on how their local environment is linked to global happenings. For Canadian students, it will mean reflecting on Canada's role in the global community.  For international students coming to the University of Calgary for an international experience, it is important that they have the opportunity to embrace and learn about Canadian culture.
  • Developing leadership skills in multicultural communities.  As communities become increasingly diverse, it is important for students to be able to work effectively in groups with a variety of cultural norms.  Students will have the leadership opportunity to be involved with the Global Village Council which will run events and programs.  More information about how to get involved will be given in students' move-in packages.  Not only will students gain valuable skills and experiences, they may get credit for participating in this expereience on their Co-Curricular Record.
