Loans and Other Funding

There are a number of resources available to students to help pay fees each term, such as student loans, scholarships, and bursaries.

Many students apply for government student loans to help pay their tuition fees and cover other expenses while in school.

  • If you have already applied for loan funding, Enrolment Services must have certified your loan funding and remit any tuition owing to the University before the fee deadline in order for your fees to be deferred for thirty days beyond the fee deadline.  A Notice of Assessment is not sufficient for deferring fees.
  • If you have not applied for loan funding, be advised from the beginning of the process, until you receive your notice of assessment, takes approximately 4 weeks before you receive your documents.
  • Once your funding has been approved, registration must be confirmed by the university.  If your loan has been electronically confirmed, a pre-printed signature will appear on your loan document under “authorized signature”.  If there is a “remit” amount listed, your loan can be cashed without visiting Enrolment Services.  For further information regarding confirmed student loans, refer to the documents enclosed in your initial loan package.
  • A "remit" amount listed on your loan is intended to cover outstanding Tuition and General Fees.  A 30 day deferral is automatically put in place when the University requests your Tuition and General fees to be paid by your Student Loans.
  • If you require more information regarding the student loan process please visit our Financing Your Education website

Another option to help you pay your fees is funding through some of the University of Calgary's many scholarships and bursaries.  If you are receiving entrance awards or scholarships from the University of Calgary, in most cases, awards will first be applied to any outstanding tuition after the fee deadline, with the remainder being sent to the student.  If you require more information regarding student awards please visit www.ucalgary.ca/studentfinance.

Students expecting scholarships and bursaries administered by the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada must notify Enrolment Services before the deadline for fee payment. Students expecting other scholarships not administered by the University of Calgary, grants or other financial assistance from authorized agencies, must notify Enrolment Services before the deadline for fee payment.  This notification should be in writing on agency letterhead, indicate the amount of funding, and indicate the student's name for which the funding is intended.

Sponsorship
Sponsored students who have their education funded by an external source, such as a company or agency. If you are a sponsored student please take the necessary steps to ensure your fees are properly paid. Get more information on sponsored students

Tuition Support

Eligible students should refer to the University of Calgary Human Resources website for more information.

Forms need to be submitted to the Fees and Financial Aid office in the Fee Drop Box Depository outside Room 122 MacKimmie Library Block (beside the Cashier Wickets) in advance of the fee deadlines.  After the last day to pay fees, the tuition support will be posted to the student's account once it has been confirmed by Human Resources.  The tuition support process can be lengthly, so students should drop off their support forms well in advance of the fee deadline to allow enough time for Human Resources to approve the tuition support.

The student is responsible for paying the difference of what is not covered by tuition support by the fee deadline (Ie.  Tuition support covers only tuition, so the student is responsible for paying all mandatory fees by the fee deadline, including Athletics, Student's Union fees, etc).  Students can refer to "Charges Due" in the People Soft Student Center for a breakdown of the tution and fees assessed.
