Business
school tops
in social, environmental research
The
Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary ranks among
the top schools in the world in researching social and environmental
stewardship.
The ranking is part of a report by the Aspen Institute and
World Resources Institute.
The
report, Beyond Grey Pinstripes 2003: Preparing MBAs for Social and
Environmental Stewardship, challenges business schools
to arm graduate students with skills for effective leadership
in a changing world. Haskayne shares its position as a top-tier research
school with
such world-renowned business schools as Wharton at the University
of Pennsylvania, Haas at UC Berkeley, and the University
of Michigan.
“
Learning from leading experts about environmental management
and social responsibility is a core part of the Haskayne School of Business
experience,” says Carol Stewart, interim dean. “Calgary’s
business community places great value on social and environmental
stewardship. What better place to learn about corporate responsibility
than in a
city that places it at the forefront?”
The
report also ranks the Haskayne School of Business among the top15
business schools in the world teaching future executives
how to manage environmental and social impacts. The school’s MBA students
can choose to specialize in global energy management and sustainable
development. Many of the school’s courses include content about
social and environmental stewardship.
“
More than ever, business leaders need to be equipped to manage
social and environmental impacts,” says Harrie Vredenburg, a professor
who holds the Suncor Energy Chair and is founder and director
of the award-winning TCPL International Institute for Resource
Industries and
Sustainability Studies (TC-IRIS), a research centre located
within the Haskayne School of Business.
“ As a hub of research in the areas of competitive strategy and
sustainable development, Haskayne is in a position
to provide innovative course content that leads in this field.”
