The University
of Calgary has been selected to receive the Premier’s Award for Healthy Workplaces, in recognition of its
Healthy U of C program. U of C received the highest accolade—the
Award of Distinction —in the large employer category.
Healthy
U of C is an institution-wide strategy to improve the health and wellness
of faculty, staff and students. It has
many components, such as free seminars on stress-reduction,
smoking cessation, time management
and yoga; a staff wellness centre which offers counseling
and occupational health support; discounted rates for the use of the
U of
C’s recreational
facilities; nutritional consultation; Healthy U of C Week in October,
and other events held throughout the year.
“We’re delighted to receive this award,” says Katherine
Sheehan, associate vice-president (human resources). “Healthy
U of C recognizes that health and wellness is a shared responsibility
between the organization
and its people. We also recognize that as a post-secondary
institution, we have a special responsibility to create a healthy community
that
enhances the student experience and models healthy choices. ”
Health
Check, which is a free health-care screening program offered several
times a year, is one of the more popular Healthy
U of C events. Staff or students who participate in a Health
Check are screened
for cholesterol and blood pressure, weight and waist measurements,
and complete a lifestyle questionnaire before receiving a
personal interpretation of the findings that may encourage them to
see a health professional
or to increase physical activity.
The Premier’s Award for Healthy Workplaces recognizes Alberta
employers that provide healthy workplace programs that encourage employees
to make healthy eating choices and incorporate active living into their
workplaces.
