Designing our worlds

Encouraging “green” development in fragile mountain ecosystems and complex global cities, designing contemporary cultural spaces and advancing interdisciplinary design education and practice will be the key issues discussed at a special symposium celebrating 35 years of achievements of the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Environmental Design.
The
Designing Our Worlds symposium, Oct. 20—21, will feature presentations
and panel discussions on the past, present and future of environmental
design as it relates to natural settings and urban environments.
Featured speakers include renowned architect Craig Dykers,
designer of the new cultural centre to be built at the ground
zero site in New York City; wilderness conservationist and
author Karsten Heuer; acclaimed architect and educator Marvin
Malecha; and renowned U of C wolf biologist Dr. Paul Paquet.
The public and media are invited to attend the free event
at the Metropolitan Conference Centre at 333, 4th Avenue S.W.
in downtown Calgary on Oct. 20 and on the U of C campus on
Oct. 21.
The event schedule is as follows:
Friday, Oct. 20 – Metropolitan Conference Centre
- “Green development,” presentation and discussion led by
Dr. Paul Paquet, 10:15 a.m. to noon.
- “Being Caribou,” by Karsten Heuer, keynote lunch address,
noon.
- “Design and Contemporary Culture,” by Craig Dykers, 2:30
p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 21 – U of C campus
- ”Interdisciplinarity in Education,” by Marvin Malecha,
Murray Fraser Hall Room 160, 10:15 a.m. to noon.
- Box lunch and lab tours in EVDS gallery, noon to 2:15 p.m.
- “EVDS in Perspective,” featuring past and present EVDS
deans, Murray Fraser Hall Room 160, 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.
