ISEEEDeadline looms for student energy projects

By Mark Lowey

University of Calgary students and student clubs interested in the area of sustainable energy, environment and economy can now apply for funding to enhance their learning experience.

The first deadline for applications to the new program created by Shell Canada Limited and the U of C—which offers up to $100,000 this year to students and clubs pursuing an activity or event related to the area—is March 30, 2007.

The Shell Energy Experiential Learning (SEEL) program, administered by the Institute for Sustainable Energy, Environment and Economy, will offer $100,000 a year over four years for enhanced learning opportunities for students. This includes club activities, field trips, conferences and undergraduate research projects in areas that include business, economics, engineering, earth sciences, environmental design, natural resources law and information technology as they relate to sustainable energy, environment and economy.

“Shell’s contribution will go a long way towards complementing the theory that we learn in the classroom. Hands-on learning such as field trips and special projects will benefit students in many disciplines,” said Kiran Somanchi, a chemical engineering student in the Schulich School of Engineering. “It will help attract more students to the U of C.”

ISEEE has emailed the program policy and application form to deans’ offices in all U of C faculties and schools. The policy and application form can also be obtained by emailing info@iseee.ca or by calling the ISEEE office at 220-6100.

Applications are judged by an evaluation committee that includes one student from each of the six key faculties and schools working with ISEEE—Environmental Design, Law, Science and Social Sciences, as well as the Schulich School of Engineering and the Haskayne School of Business. One representative each from Shell, the six faculties and the U of C’s Research Services are also on the evaluation committee.

There are two categories in the program—one for individual students and one for student clubs—that each offer up to $50,000 in funding for the year.

Applications received by March 30 are for activities or events starting April 15 to Aug. 31, 2007. The next deadline for the second round of funding for this year is July 30, for activities and events starting Sept. 1, 2007 to Jan. 31, 2008.

Funding will be awarded based on several criteria, including the quality of enhanced educational experience to be realized for the students and the relevance to Shell Canada’s business operations or employees. All funding recipients will participate with Shell in a formal SEEL program symposium and an informal lunch for the year in which they receive funding.
