Alumni win Pulse of Social Work awards

The Faculty of Social Work’s alumni swept the fifth
annual Pulse of Social Work awards, which celebrates outstanding
work by more than 2,000 social workers in Calgary and across
the region.
The Pulse awards program is based on the longstanding partnership between
the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Social Work, the Calgary Health
Region, the City of Calgary, Calgary and Area Child and Family
Services, the United Way of Calgary and Area, and the Alberta
College of Social Workers.
This year’s winners include:
- Norma Donnelly, BSW’82, crisis
social worker, City of Calgary: advocacy award.
- Barb Hinger, MSW’03, clinical coordinator/counsellor,
Airdrie Family Services: clinical practice award.
- Sybil Braganza, MSW’98,
community social worker, Senior Services Division, City of
Calgary: community development award.
- Laverne
Guthrie, MSW’97, social worker, Foothills Hospital,
Calgary Health Region: field instruction award.
- Joan Furtney,
BSW’82, social worker, Peter Lougheed Centre,
Calgary Health Region: frontline worker award.
- David Flux, MSW’94,
Debra Hartley, MSW’00, Robert Wiles,
MSW’99, Sybil Braganza, MSW’98, Anna Medeiros, BSW’02,
community social workers in the Seniors Social Development
Unit, Seniors Services Division, City of Calgary: interdisciplinary
group award.
- Dr. Jane Matheson, PhD’99, CEO, Woods Homes: leadership award.
- Jake
Kuiken, MSW’69, current PhD student, manager, social
policy, CNS, City of Calgary: lifetime achievement.
All Calgary and area social workers are invited to celebrate
the award recipients, the nominees and all social workers at
the Pulse of Social Work awards ceremony, which will be held
at 5 p.m., Wednesday, March 28 at the Red and White Club at
the Olympic Volunteer Centre at McMahon Stadium. Doors open
at 4 p.m. Refreshments will be served and a cash bar will be
