Calgary students win at entrepreneurship contest
By Katie Wattie
A group of University of Calgary students was the top overall
team at a recent regional entrepreneurship competition, winning
first place for innovation and second place in the financial
literacy category.
The 2007 Advancing Canadian Entrepreneurship (ACE) Western
Canadian Regional Exposition was held March 1 and 2, attracting
more than 200 students, faculty, alumni and business professionals
from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
“I am very proud and excited for our success at the regional exposition,” said
ACE club president Irfanali Moledina, a Haskayne student. “Our team
worked very hard this year and the awards are a great way to
show the work that everyone has put in.”
ACE Calgary won first place for innovation with its Colourful
Spaces Art Gallery project, which provides business skills
to U of C fine art students and arranges for their art to be
shown in high-profile corporate venues in downtown Calgary.
Innovation team members were Shauna Macrea, Sophie Nzojibwami, Kelly Fitzsimmons
and Richerd Chan.
ACE Calgary received second place in the financial literacy
category for its program to help low-income families control
debt. The students teamed up with the United Way of Calgary
and Area to develop a modular training program to teach basic
financial literacy, budgeting and efficiently managing debt.
The team also won $1,000 in prize money. Financial literacy
team members were Alex Sellers, Gladwin Sun and Whitney Skinner.
ACE Calgary qualified to attend the national competition in
Toronto from May 7-9. If the team succeeds there, it will compete
in the World Cup in New York in September.
Founded in 1987, ACE is a national, not-for-profit organization
that acts as an umbrella for entrepreneurial young Canadians.
Student teams conduct educational projects throughout the year
and then present summaries to judging panels comprised of top
business leaders.
