A Long Road Toward Human Dignity

On December 23, 1997, Robichaud, in his role as President of the University of Moncton, acted on the findings of an internal hearing and expelled a student for violating the university’s policy on sexual and gender harassment. His decision led to a great deal of controversy and a widely publicized debate both on and off campus. In the letter that follows, M. Robichaud discusses and analyses the heated response to his decision and outlines the reasons for his decision to expel the student.

Consensual Relations Between Students and Faculty

Sexual relationships between students and faculty are fraught with peril. Although all of us have personal examples of a faculty member who married a student and lived happily ever after, many, if not most, of these relationships have a very short shelf life. When they turn sour, the risks to all parties to the relationship can be very high. If the student complains of sexual harassment, the risks to the faculty member and the university are high indeed.

People who have been hurt or humiliated often hope for an apology. They may hope that an apology from the offender will restore trust, dignity, and, perhaps, a sense of justice. A thoughtful apology is a powerful means of indicating self-awareness and of showing respect for the person who was offended.

University of Calgary's Reports on Status of Women

The President's Advisory Committee on the Status of Women was created in 1978 (The University of Calgary Gazette, Vol. 7, No. 18, 30 March 1978, University of Calgary).

In 1990, President Murray Fraser appointed Susan Stone-Blackburn, Advisor to the President on Women's Issues. The Advisor's terms of reference included making recommendations to the President on policy relating to the status of women at the University of Calgary, chairing the Advisory Committee on the Status of Women, participating in the development of employment equity policies and procedures, facilitating communication among university groups concerned with women's issues, encouraging research on the status of women at the university, and organizing special events related to the status of women at the university.

Between 1990 and 2013, there were eight Advisors to the President on Women's Issues:
