Speaker Spotlight

(in)Visibility as Revolution: A manifesto for social transformation/Queer(ing) identities in STEM

In a recent speech, U.S. Senator Cory Booker extended a well known Martin Luther King, Jr., quote about progress toward a more ethical and just world: “The arc of the moral universe does not just naturally curve towards justice,” Booker said. “We must bend it.”

Discussions about diversity in STEM disciplines tend to focus on visible, countable identities: Racial or ethnic identity, gender, or first-generation college student status, for example. This talk from Dr. Jacob McWilliams aims at disrupting this focus by inviting attendees to consider how the invisible, uncounted (or uncountable) identities we carry might transform both the rhetoric and realities of diversity, in STEM disciplines and in education more broadly.

What is Diversity Week

Diversity Week is an initiative to celebrate diversity and inclusion on University of Calgary campuses through a variety of events, open to all community members. The University of Calgary recognizes the importance of creating and maintaining a welcoming and inclusive environment for all members of the community. Diversity Week is a collaboration between multiple groups at the University of Calgary to highlight our shared commitment to inclusion and to spark conversations about inclusion and equity in the 21st Century.

All events are supported by the Office of the President, Office of Diversity, Equity and Protected Disclosure, Students Union, Women's Resource Centre, Faith and Spirituality Centre, Career Services, Native Centre, Alberta Civil Liberties Research Centre, Q-Centre, SU Volunteer Services, Faculty of Social Work, Schulich School of Engineering, Werklund School of Education, University of Calgary International, Student Accessibility Services, Graduate Students’ Association, Human Resources, Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning, Equity and Professionalism Office - Cumming School of Medicine, and Faculty of Science. Thank you for all of your hard work for making this week a success!

How Can I Get Involved?

You can start by attending one of the many workshops, activities and events across campus from March 20-24, 2017. With events and activities at each UCalgary campus, we can work together and learn more about diversity, equity and inclusion in our daily lives. Check Diversity Week Schedule!

Take photos, share comments and feedback on social media, using #UCalgaryDiversityWeek and be a part of the conversation.
