This February, athletes from around the world will converge on Vancouver to demonstrate their athletic prowess, competing for medals and international recognition for themselves and their countries. Haskayne School of Business tourism marketing professor Simon Hudson will be demonstrating a different kind of muscle.

Hudson has been chosen to deliver a lecture as part of “Intellectual Muscle: University Dialogues for the 2010 Games in Vancouver.” The series, which will run on the 2010 Games site, will feature prominent Canadian intellectuals on topics relating to the three pillars of the Games: sports, culture and sustainability.  >> Listen to the podcast of his talk

According to Hudson, an official education component for the 2010 Games is exciting and innovative. “All eyes will be on Vancouver and Canada during the 2010 games,” he says. “The Intellectual Muscle project is a terrific way to showcase Canadian universities and the excellent research going on in this country.”

While he can’t give away the content of his lecture, Hudson acknowledges that event leveraging—how a city or country can benefit from the exposure resulting from hosting a major international event—has been a key focus of his research since the beginning of his academic career.

“The Vancouver Olympics will undoubtedly have a positive short-term impact, but the real goal for a city or country is to build the image of the destination in such a way as to increase visitation levels in the years after the Games,” he says.

Hudson will initially deliver a lecture at the Haskayne School of Business, which will result in a podcast on the 2010 Games website on Oct. 12. Excerpts will also appear in print, TV and online.
