Fair trade Halloween
Members of the University of Calgary’s Engineers without Borders chapter will be going door-to-door in communities near campus handing out fair trade chocolate and information pamphlets.Members of the University of Calgary’s Engineers without Borders chapter will be doing some “reverse” trick or treating tomorrow night to raise awareness about fair trade. They’ll be joining affiliates from the Engineers without Borders (EWB) Calgary professional chapter going door-to-door in the communities near campus handing out fair trade chocolate and information pamphlets. “We won’t be taking candy; we’ll be giving it out,” says Andrew Carss, media relations and article director for the U of C’s chapter of EWB. “We’re hoping to raise awareness about how Canada can get involved to provide opportunities for developing nations.” Fair trade is a trading partnership that helps producers in the developing world get the best value for their products in established markets. Fair trade is not charity; it is a social responsibility and an ethical choice, says Carss. In addition to handing out more than 2,600 fair trade chocolates to households on Halloween, the group will provide information about fair trade and where fair trade products can be purchased. The awareness campaign was organized in conjunction with the national office of EWB. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate.
