King-Shier is a full professor and Alberta Innovates Health Solutions Scholar in the faculty, and holds a joint appointment in the department of community health sciences. She is a member of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta and a research associate in the Epidemiology Coordinating and Research Centre at the University of Alberta. As one of Canada’s leading cardiovascular nurse scientists, she has developed and led a multi-disciplinary program of research in the area of determinants of cardiovascular health behaviour and health-care decisions and delivery.

She is currently leading or co-leading several studies that focus on the influence of ethnocultural affiliation and gender on secondary prevention decision-making.

“I am absolutely delighted by this honour and am grateful to my colleagues who nominated and wrote letters of support,” said King-Shier. “I am very privileged to have received support from Alberta Innovates-Health Solutions, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada to help me advance my program of research. I thoroughly enjoy my work and am truly excited to be able to do it each day.”

Nancy Moules, who wrote the letter of nomination, says King-Shier is very deserving of the award.

“Kathryn is clearly a leader in both nursing and in the cardiovascular field,” said Moules. “She is also a wonderful mentor to her undergraduate and graduate students, and to her colleagues – including myself.”

The award will be presented at CASN’s annual award reception in Ottawa on Nov. 13th.
