We are both really pleased to be chairing the committee this year and we’re excited to be kicking off another United Way campaign on campus. Thanks to all of you, we raised more than $320,000 for the United Way last year – the most we have ever raised. In addition to that, we increased employee participation, boosted campaign awareness on campus, and we even earned the university the 2011 United Way Spirits of Gold partnership award for outstanding leadership and dedication. Most importantly, we had a lot of fun achieving this tremendous success. In 2011, students, faculty and staff braved chilly waters, climbed thousands of stairs, collected hundreds of toothbrushes, and scored big in our first ever street hockey tournament. This year, we aim to do better. Our goal is to raise $350,000 – and we know we can do this. We’ve already pulled a plane to victory, and raised more than $4,100 during the Bling Bling orientation week fundraiser. The Faculty of Medicine has set the bar high for campus participation, holding barbecues since August and already collecting $4,800 in donations. We’re clearly off to a great start! We’re celebrating our campaign launch today with our United Way Coffee Day. Fifty cents from all brewed coffee or tea purchases on the main and Foothills campuses will be donated to our campaign. We also invite the university community to gather in the Taylor Quadrangle after the Community Report event on Oct. 2. Have lunch on us to help us kick off our United Way campaign on campus. Finally, we’d like to thank you again for what you do for our university and for our community. Whether your donation comes in dollars or time, you make a difference in the lives of Calgarians. We look forward to seeing our students, faculty and staff, share their creativity and enthusiasm for what we hope to be our most successful campaign yet! Sincerely,
The United Way works with local organizations to support and encourage families to break the cycle of poverty and work toward building a better, stronger community. The University of Calgary United Way campaign runs from Oct.1 to Nov. 30. For more information on how you can get involved, please visit www.ucalgary.ca/unitedway |
