U of C wins three ASTech awards

Three University of Calgary faculty members are recipients of the 2008 Alberta Science and Technology (ASTech) Leadership Foundation awards, the highest honour available to individuals and organizations in Alberta’s science and technology community.

Award winner Phil Langill, director of the Rothney Astrophysical Observatory and Faculty of Science professor, was presented with the Excellence in Science and Technology Public Awareness award for the observatory’s public outreach activities.
Patrick Hettiaratchi
Patrick Hettiaratchi
Patrick Hettiaratchi, professor in the Schulich School of Engineering received the Shell/ASTech Outstanding Achievement in Environmental Technology and Innovation award for his revolutionary landfill biocell design.
Tristam Chivers
Tristram Chivers

Tristram Chivers, faculty professor and professor emeritus in the Faculty of Science is a chemist whose research benefits Alberta’s sour gas and petrochemical industries. Chivers received the Outstanding Leadership in Alberta Science award.

“The winners of these awards represent the depth of excellence in Alberta’s science and technology fields,” said Minister of Alberta Advanced Education and Technology, Doug Horner. “They are driving innovation in environmental stewardship, the health of individual Albertans, information technology, and our food supply.”

Marvin J. Fritzler, professor of medicine at the U of C was a finalist in the Outstanding Leadership in Alberta Science category. Fadhel Ghannouchi, professor, in the Schulich School of Engineering was a finalist in the Outstanding Leadership in Alberta Technology category.
