Photo by Riley BrandtAvenue Magazine’s Top-40 edition is on newsstands now, and the University of Calgary alumni and campus connections to this year’s list are as strong as ever.

Grads Kathryn Schneider, BKin’96, and Houston Peschl, BA’98, MBA’10, are among those receiving the honour.

Schneider, a physiotherapist, is a former teaching assistant in the Faculty of Kinesiology and finishing up her PhD in orthopedic and vestibular physiotherapy as related to concussion assessment and treatment in sport.

She’s one of 19 University of Calgary people – 13 of whom are alumni – on this year’s Top 40.

“I was surprised and honoured, even a bit overwhelmed,” said Schneider, who’s defending her PhD this month. “It’s such a great group of people.”

Schneider’s PhD research is timely. Concussion in sport, and bodychecking policies have received ample media coverage over the last couple of years. Schneider presented her research at the fourth International Consensus in Concussion in Sport in Zurich last week.

“There’s a lot of interest in concussion; it’s such a common injury,” she said. “The group in Calgary is leading edge.”

After defending her PhD, Schneider wants to keep a balance between each aspect of her career, and continue her research.

“I love research, clinical work and teaching as well, and they’re all interconnected,” she said. “There are still many areas that require further research to understand this injury.”

Faculty of Arts and Haskayne School of Business alumnus Peschl is director of operations and sustainability at DIRTT Environmental Solutions.

“Given the calibre of driven and dedicated professionals in Calgary, it’s an honour to be selected by Avenue,” he said.

Peschl finished his most recent degree about two years ago but his ties to campus, especially the Haskayne School of Business, remain strong.

“Haskayne is a very important part of my personal and professional life,” Peschl said. “It has supplied many close friends through the EMBA program, and I have remained close with a number of professors, like professors Jim Dewald and David Lertzman. Professionally, I am working with the department on a few exciting levels, like helping out in the area of green supply chain and sustainability by being a guest lecturer.”

Avenue Calgary‘s Top 40 Under 40 celebrates Calgarians under the age of 40 who excel in their respective fields, give back to their community and raise the profile of the city.
