U of C looms large in Top 40

The University of Calgary plays a commanding role in Avenue magazine’s 2009 Top 40 Under 40 list, with more than half of those named having ties to the campus community. In the November issue of Calgary’s leading city lifestyle publication, 18 U of C alumni, seven faculty members and a support staffer are named to this year’s list of up-and-coming influencers and civic leaders.

Now in its 11th year, the top 40 feature recognizes individuals excelling in their careers, giving back to the community and raising the city’s profile.

“I think the high number of Top 40s with an association with the U of C shows the growing strength both of this institution and the city itself,” says Käthe Lemon, Avenue’s editor. “More and more of our graduates want to stay in the city and can find success doing so. Also, the university is attracting a large number of highly motivated students, faculty and staff, who in turn contribute to the city in so many ways through their work, civic engagement and volunteerism.”

Jeff Booke, MBA'05, is executive director of the Calgary Jewish Community Centre and a member of Avenue magazine's 2009 Top 40 Under 40.
Jeff Booke, MBA’05, is one of those contributors. He moved to Calgary from Winnipeg in 2002 to take on the role of executive director of the city’s struggling Jewish Community Centre—and became the youngest in that role among 250 such centres in North America. The turnaround he and his staff of 85 subsequently engineered at the southwest Calgary facility is a major reason for his inclusion in Avenue magazine’s list.

“I am not a guy who looks for accolades; I hope my work speaks for itself,” says the husband and father of two young boys. “That being said, this was quite flattering and very much appreciated.”

Booke believes there’s a huge connection between higher education and one’s desire to achieve. “My MBA program, matched with a physical education degree, gave me the ideal toolkit to be successful at the JCC,” he says. “I was really fortunate that I was able to negotiate with the [Haskayne] dean and two faculty members to specialize in HR management. Their willingness and flexibility to create this specialization was a key to my success.”

“We’re thrilled with Jeff’s success and the successes of our alumni and all members of the U of C community who make Calgary a great place to live, who help the less fortunate and who give back in so many ways,” says Catherine Bagnell Styles, the U of C’s associate vice-president, external relations.

Peter Tieleman, a professor in the Faculty of Science, was also named to Avenue magazine's 2009 Top 40 Under 40.
The impact of those in the top 40 is not limited to Calgary. Peter Tieleman, a professor in biological sciences, was one of seven faculty members to make the list. He is being recognized for his research into understanding what happens within cells and how specific proteins interact with cell membranes, work that he hopes will help to better comprehend the basic process involved in Alzheimer’s and prion diseases.

“I’m proud of building a pretty elaborate yet integrated research program with the contributions of many students and post-docs” here at the U of C, Tieleman says.
