Art in a square_space

Bidding on some of the art work at the EVDS show.
A square frame and a creative idea. It sounds simplistic, but once the many square frames filled with artwork go up on the walls of the Faculty of Environmental Design Kasian Gallery, the result is a stunning and very diverse art show. Welcome to square_space, the third annual EVDS frame show and silent auction running until Nov. 20.

Square_space features the creative work of EVDS students, faculty, staff and alumni inside black and white square frames. The artwork can be purchased by anyone through a silent auction. Bids start at $15 and the profits go back to the artists, although they are encouraged to donate the funds to charity.

“There is so much diversity in EVDS and it really comes through in square_space,” says Braden Reid, EVDS students’ association vice-president communications. “We get everything from drawings and photography to miniature versions of class projects.”

Square_space started three years ago and its unique concept has been extremely successful. Last year, 30 artists submitted more than 70 frames raising nearly $1,000. About half of the profit was donated to local charities.

The silent auction will close Friday, Nov. 20 and bidders can expect a lot of last-minute action.

“Last year I was running down from my office every few minutes to check my bids,” says Interim Dean Loraine Fowlow, who designed five frames for this year’s show. Over the years, Fowlow has purchased nearly 15 frames.

All are welcome to come check out the exhibit and participate in the silent auction. The EVDS Kasian Gallery is located in the Professional Faculties Building 2182 and is open Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
