The Women’s Resource Centre (WRC) has announced the recipients of 6th annual WRC Awards.

The awards honour women who have overcome barriers in the pursuit of professional and/or academic excellence, who have made outstanding contributions to the community and who demonstrate commitment to advancing women’s issues.

WRC Distinguished Alumna 2013

Sonia K. Aujla-Bhullar holds a BA in development studies and an MA in graduate division of educational research from the University of Calgary, and a BEd in elementary education from the University of British Columbia. She currently holds a learning leader position with the Calgary Board of Education. As a fiercely committed advocate for cultural and gender equity, Sonia has dedicated the last 10 years of her life to extensive volunteer work focusing on countless projects both locally and internationally.

Patricia Okahashi, with a BA in psychology from the University of British Columbia and a BA in women’s studies from the University of Calgary, used her academic knowledge in combination with her astute capacity to assess psychosocial situations to promote justice for women and persons with disabilities. Despite her long battle with scleraderma and cancer, she was always ready to give her time, her heart and her strength to help individuals and to change oppressive societal practices.

WRC Distinguished Student 2013

Kenya-Jade Pinto is completing her final semester of a BA in international relations (minor in development studies). She currently holds the position of Students’ Union vice-president academic. During her campaign in early 2012, Kenya-Jade received the difficult news that her time with her father was limited. In an attempt to navigate personal loss and advocate for cancer research and education, she took part in various fundraising events. As a founding member of the Women in Leadership club on campus, Kenya-Jade has engaged and empowered young women to pursue their passion and take on leadership opportunities.

The WRC Awards Presentation Ceremony will be held in the Ballroom, MacEwan Hall, University of Calgary, on Saturday, March 9, 12 – 1:30pm. The ceremony will include inspiring stories about the award recipients, and will feature a musical performance by Amy Thissen, BComm ’07.
