Montreal poet and translator Oana Avasilichioaei has been named the 2010 – 2011 Markin-Flanagan Canadian Writer-in-Residence. Avasilichioaei's residency begins at the U of C Sept. 1 and runs until June 30, 2011.

During her residency, Avasilichioaei will devote 50 percent of her time to writing and the other half to community activities, including free individual manuscript consultations with local writers, public readings and workshops. While in Calgary, she will be exploring a new body of work that will cross between performance, orality and the book object, as well as expanding a poetry project inspired by her own field translation of the early Romanian works of Paul Celan.

"The Markin-Flanagan Distinguished Writers Program offers writers the opportunity to be part of a dynamic community of writers, teachers and students interested in innovative writing practices," says Avasilichioaei. "I look forward to being part of this community and drawing inspiration from its energy, as well as having time to work on new projects."

Avasilichioaei's writing explores history, geography, public space, textual architecture, multilingualism, translation, and textual and collaborative performance.

Her books include feria: a poempark, Occupational Sickness, a translation of Romanian poet Nichita Stănescu, and Expeditions of a Chimæra, a collaborative work with Erín Moure (a former Markin-Flanagan Distinguished Visiting Writer). A translation of Les Îles by Quebecoise poet Louise Cotnoir will be published as The Islands in 2011.

Avasilichioaei has performed her work and given talks on poetics and translation at readings, conferences and festivals in Canada, USA, Mexico and Europe and was the founder and curator of the Atwater Poetry Project reading series in Montreal from 2004 to 2009. In the fall of 2009, she was the Canada Council writer-in-residence at Green College at the University of British Columbia.

Housed in the Faculty of Arts, the Markin-Flanagan Distinguished Writers Program celebrates reading and writing through a unique vision. It helps advance the careers of promising Canadian writers and enriches the Canadian writing community through two residency programs: a 10-month residency for emerging Canadian writers; and residencies of varying length for writers of international distinction.
