The Students’ Union officially announced today the winners of its 2008-09 Teaching Excellence Awards. The awards program is designed to recognize the outstanding teaching achievements of faculty members at the University of Calgary. Nominations come directly from students.

“We are very excited about this year’s awards,” said Pamela Weatherbee, Students’ Union VP Academic. “We had a very impressive pool of nominees and winners who should all be very proud of their efforts in making such a pronounced impact on their students’ academic and non-academic lives.”

Twenty-two faculty members and six teaching assistants will receive awards at a special ceremony taking place the evening of Tuesday, April 28.

The Teaching Excellence Awards is an initiative by the Students’ Union to honour University of Calgary faculty members for their outstanding contributions to the classroom and laboratory.

The Students’ Union invites students to nominate teachers they feel are deserving of the award in November, March, June and August. University of Calgary faculty members and teaching assistants (TAs) require multiple nominations to be considered officially nominated. Nomination forms were available on the Students’ Union web site as well as by visiting the Students’ Union office.

Excellent teachers are chosen for their ability to communicate broad and accurate knowledge of the subject matter, as well as for their self-confidence and ability to create enthusiasm among students. Other criteria include success at challenging students, ability to cultivate creative thinking on the part of students, availability for consultation outside of class along with fairness and consistency in grading.
