Hugely popular text messaging spawns language change

Maria Bakardjieva, a professor of communication and culture at the University of Calgary, says society is stronger and richer with every new medium that allows us to connect to others. “But with texting, we’re also brutalizing written language in order to communicate. Still, it demonstrates that humans can fill any message with meaning and utility, no matter how lean.”

iPhones deliver medical scans to MDs

Doctors all over Canada could soon use Apple iPhones to examine patients' diagnostic scans, thanks to a Calgary researcher. Dr. Ross Mitchell, a University of Calgary medical biophysicist, created the specialized iPhone application, which was approved last week by Health Canada as a diagnostic tool.

Alberta Children’s Hospital beefs up, adds neurology expert

An internationally renowned expert in child neurology has been recruited to Calgary in an attempt to develop a world-class program. Dr. Jong Rho, director of pediatric epilepsy research at the Barrow Neurological Institute and associate director of child neurology at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Centre in Phoenix, Ariz., will start at the University of Calgary and Alberta Children’s Hospital on Aug. 1.
