Nobel nominee to speak at U of C

Hernando de Soto, a Peruvian economist who has been hailed as a “development star” and an “economist for the poor,” will deliver a keynote address at the U of C on Tuesday, Oct. 3 at 7:30 p.m. His talk is titled  The Quest for Innovation in International Development, and is part of the International Partnership Symposium which runs on campus Oct. 2-4. De Soto founded the Institute for Liberty and Democracy, which designs and implements programs to empower the poor in developing nations.

Retired prof wins social work award

Social Work’s professor emeritus Dr. Richard Ramsay has received the prestigious Andrew Mouravieff-Apostol award, presented in Munich during the International Federation of Social Workers World Conference in July. Along with colleagues, Ramsay developed a suicide prevention training program that earned several provincial achievement awards, as well as Canada’s Social Policy Research Knowledge Broker award in 2002, and is used in several American states, Australia, Norway, Scotland, England, New Zealand, Northern Ireland and Singapore.

Radiology head appointed

Dr. Robert Sevick has been appointed head of the Department of Radiology for a five-year term, following Dr. Chen Fong’s term completion. A professor in the departments of radiology and clinical neurosciences, Sevick brings a wealth of leadership experience in radiology and a strong research and clinical background.
 
Prof receives Medawar Prize

Dr. Pekka Häyry, clinical professor in the departments of surgery and pathology, has won the Transplantation Society’s Medawar Prize, recognizing his outstanding achievements in the field of transplantation over his 26-year career. Häyry accepted the prize in July 26 in Boston at the Transplantation Society’s biannual congress. He joins 22 recipients of the Medawar Prize including Dr. Joseph Murray, Harvard University, who completed the first kidney transplant, and Dr. Norman Shumway, Stanford University, who developed heart and lung transplantation.

Osteoporosis researcher honoured

Dr. David Hanley, professor in the departments of medicine, community health sciences and oncology, was recently presented with the Lindy Fraser Memorial Award for 2006 by Osteoporosis Canada. A past chair of Osteoporosis Canada’s Scientific Advisory Council, he was nominated by his peers in recognition of his clinical and basic research in calcium metabolism and osteoporosis, and his leadership in osteoporosis education.

Labour relations film wins silver

The documentary film Beyond Collision: High Integrity Labour Relations, which was co-produced, scripted and narrated by Dr. Allen Ponak, professor emeritus at the Haskayne School of Business, has won the Silver Screen award in the College and Education category at the 2006 International Film and Video Festival, awarded in Los Angeles in June. The festival attracted 1,250 entries from 39 countries. The film highlights successful union-management practices at four companies across Canada and is being used in universities, by companies and unions, and labour relations agencies.
