It’s already September, but there’s still plenty of time to celebrate the University of Calgary’s 40th anniversary. Many special anniversary events are scheduled to take place during the final months of the year.

“I’m anxious for the fall to start so the upcoming events can get some publicity and the people can get into the swing of things,” says Dr. Sandy Murphree, dean of science and chair of the U of C’s special projects fund committee.

So many good ideas for anniversary events were suggested by staff, students and faculty that the committee used up all available funds in June and a final round of funding previously scheduled for October was cancelled, says Murphree.

“I think there will be a lot of fun things going on this fall, starting with the big KICKOFF event on Sept. 9,” says Murphree.

Billed as the Once-in-Four-Decades All-Day Birthday Bash, KICKOFF features a rock concert and a Dinos football game and will unite alumni, faculty and students in a celebration of the U of C’s heritage.

Other events planned for the fall include:

  • President’s Symposium on the Arts—Toward 2046: Envisioning the Arts at the University of Calgary.
  • The Teaching and Learning Centre hosts educational speaker Dr. Craig E. Nelson.
  • Symposium and reunion for the BSc Environmental Science program.
  • Latin American Studies: A Bright Future for a Project 40 Years in the Making.
  • Louise and Richard Guy lecture series in mathematics.
  • U of C international partnership symposium: Innovation and Ingenuity.
  • 40 years of Fine Arts—The Faculty of Fine Arts 40th anniversary alumni show runs until Oct. 13 at the Mezzanine Gallery, University Theatre. (See story page 16.)
  • Diversity, Distinction and Dimensions of Canadian Architecture symposium honoring Dr. Michael McMordie.
  • EVDS Symposium—Art, Science and Environmental Design: The Principles, Pursuit and Practice of Interdisciplinarity and Their Relevance to Higher Education.
  • 40th anniversary commemorative CD release by the U of C chamber choir.
  • Schulich School of Engineering lecture series.

There will also be ongoing projects such as the Look Who’s 40 Campus Fitness Challenge, video- and Internet-based projects, and campus beautification initiatives.
