No dancing around the topic—Situating Le Sacre in 2008 symposium

By Anna Mouat

posterThe Faculty of Fine Arts is presenting a collaborative interdisciplinary symposium on Feb. 1 entitled Situating Le Sacre in 2008 on the topic of Le Sacre du Printemps. Composed by Stravinsky and choreographed by Nijinsky for Diaghilev’s Ballet Russes, with set design and costumes by Roerich, the ballet premiered in 1913 and promptly became the most infamous and celebrated scandal of the Paris arts season that year. Situating Le Sacre in 2008 symposium will bring together professors and students of dance, music and drama to address the overarching question of the symposium: How do we view Le Sacre du Printemps today in 2008?

Short position papers will be presented on a perspective of the work by Friedmann Sallis, Department of Music; Melanie Kloetzel, professor, Program of Dance; and Penny Farfan, Department of Drama, followed by a discussion between panel members moderated by Davida Monk, professor, Program of Dance. Students will be invited to join in the discussion and to respond to the presentations.

The symposium will take place on Friday, Feb. 1 in the Rosza Centre's Great Hall, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Admission is free and all are welcome to attend.
